Sinkhole swallows pond, How Do Sinkholes occurred

Sinkhole swallows pond, Residents were very concerned after a sinkhole swallowed up a pond on Sunday stunning local residents in Newcastle, California. Local landowner, Mark Korb, has said he woke up on Sunday morning only to find the man-made pond on his land had completely disappeared, apparently it had drained away due to a massive sinkhole beneath the land. The sinkhole managed to drain the entire pond just overnight, with Korb saying, "I would guess probably four to five hours for this whole area to drain." The report comes just weeks after two massive sinkholes in Florida stunned the nation, with one of them swallowing up a man as he lay in his bedroom. So what are sinkholes and how do they occur? Sinkholes are basically depressions in the ground that form over time due to the combined forces of erosion and gravity. They have been known to reveal themselves gradually over time, although sometimes, like the cases in Florida, they can cause sudden collapses. Scientists s

Grandma convicted

Grandma convicted, The 75-year-old woman and a grandma was on  Tuesday convicted of second-degree murder for killing her teenage grandson last spring in her Detroit-area home, after jurors rejected her claim that she shot him six times in self-defense. Sandra Layne cried quietly when she heard the verdict, which was delivered during the first full day of jury deliberations. She was also found guilty of using a firearm during a felony and likely faces at least 14 years in prison for the death of her grandson, Jonathan Hoffman. Defense attorney Jerome Sabbota said later that Layne was "devastated" by the verdict. But some family members had harsh words. Hoffman's mother, Jennifer Hoffman, said her mother was a "monster" who deserved to go to prison. "I'm glad she's put away and can't do harm to anyone else," Jennifer Hoffman said outside court. "He was a great kid and didn't deserve this." His father, Michael Hoffman, said the

$3 bowl for $2.22 million, Yea recently thats exactly what took place in New York City. The rare Chinese bowl, purchased for $3 at a tag sale, was reportedly sold at auction for the astonishingly high price of slightly more than $2.22 million. According to a report on Tuesday (March 19) from The Associated Press, the auction estimate comes from Sotheby's, where the bowl was sold recently. The bowl itself was said to have been purchased back in 2007 by a buyer who then put in on display in their home. It seems like the buyer wasn't quickly aware of the value of the bowl, though, having purchased it for only $3 at a tag sale. It turns out that the bowl itself is at least 1,000 years old and dates back to the Northern Song Dynasty. Nicknamed a "Ding" bowl, it was put on displays part of a fine Chinese ceramics and works of art auction on Tuesday. Sinkhole swallows pond, How did that happend?

Sinkhole swallows pond, When he went to bed Saturday night, the pond was there. On Sunday, March 17 it was gone. So How does that actually happen? thats is possibily the question everyone is having in there mind. While northern California is no where near as prone to sinkholes as Florida (see USGS sinkhole map), one clue might be the fact that the pond was man-made. While sinkholes don't need a human trigger, changes in drainage due to construction or agricultural irrigation have been known to activate mass outbreaks of sinkholes in Florida and other parts of the country. As The Christian Science Monitor reported earlier this month after a Florida man was swallowed in his bed by a sinkhole, "Drought followed by heavy rains can also instigate sinkholes as heavy, water-logged earth presses down on limestone caves suddenly devoid of buoyant water. The two previous deaths attributed to sinkholes both involved professional well drillers whose activities cracked the top of limeston

He also stressed the need for Middle East peace at the start of a three-day trip, which is aimed at resetting strained relations with both the Israelis and Palestinians, but is not expected to provide new initiatives or substantial policy moves. Descending from Air Force One in bright Spring sunshine, Obama briefly embraced Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with whom he has notoriously testy ties, before offering smiles and handshakes to waiting ranks of ministers. "I see this visit as an opportunity to reaffirm the unbreakable bond between our nations, to restate America's unwavering commitment to Israel's security and to speak directly to the people of Israel and to your neighbors," Obama said at a red-carpet welcoming ceremony at Tel Aviv

Jay-Z Raps About Beyonce on New Kendrick Lamar Track

Beyonce and Jay-Z attend the HBO Documentary Film "Beyonce: Life Is But A Dream" New York Premiere at the Ziegfeld Theater on February 12, 2013 in New York City. Jay-Z 's musical tribute to Beyonce on Kendrick Lamar's new track isn't exactly a Shakespearean sonnet, but that doesn't mean it isn't romantic. In spite of its name, "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe," the remixed song finds the 43-year-old rapper waxing poetic about his superstar wife of four years, with whom he has a 14-month-old daughter, Blue Ivy. "Up in the clouds, me and my spouse / Rumors on the ground gettin' too loud," the Brooklyn hip hop mogul rhymes. "Please turn them s--ts down, can't hear myself think / Turbulence, s--t, almost spilled my drink." Katy Perry, John Mayer Split for Second Time

Katy Perry and John Mayer attend the 55th Annual GRAMMY Awards Pre-GRAMMY Gala held at The Beverly Hilton on February 9, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. Katy Perry and John Mayer have once again said goodbye -- for now. The pop songstress, 28, and singer-songwriter, 35, have split for the second time, multiple sources confirm to Us Weekly. The high-profile pair began casually dating during summer 2012, and briefly called it quits back in August before reconciling the next month. "It's sad," one pal tells Us, but cautions that it might not be a permanent break. "It's not over until it's over. You have to see how things play out." South Korean banks, media report network crashed

Computers networks at two major South Korean banks and three top TV broadcasters went into shutdown mode en masse Wednesday, paralyzing bank machines across the country and prompting speculation of a cyberattack by North Korea. Screens went blank promptly at 2 p.m. (0500 GMT), with skulls popping up on the screens of some computers — a strong indication that hackers planted a malicious code in South Korean systems, the state-run Korea Information Security Agency said. Some computers started to get back online more than 2 ½ hours later. Police and South Korean officials investigating the shutdown said the cause was not immediately clear. But speculation centered on North Korea, with experts saying a cyberattack orchestrated by Pyongyang was likely to blame. The shutdown comes amid rising rhetoric and threats of attack from Pyongyang in response to U.N. punishment for its December rocket launch and February nuclear test. Washington also expanded sanctions against North Korea this month

Citi also understated the loss reserves for its mortgage loans and "falsely stated" that assets held off its balance sheet were of high value, Bernstein Litow

Sinkhole swallows pond, Stuns whole nation

Sinkhole swallows pond, The sinkhole has swallowed a pond on Sunday stunning a local homeowner in Newcastle, Ca. Mark Korb has reported that he woke up on Sunday morning and noticed that the man-made pond in his garden had completely drained away. Korb has said, "This looks like the moon," according to NBC News. A massive sinkhole reportedly caused the water to drain. Korb has also described that a few years ago he manually drained the pond, and that it took him a full seven days to complete the draining. However, the sinkhole managed to drain the entire pond just overnight. "I would guess probably four to five hours for this whole area to drain," Korb said. The report comes just weeks after another sinkhole appeared in Tampa, Florida, just a few miles from yet another sinkhole that devoured a man as he laid in his bed at home. The second Florida sinkhole is not thought to pose an immediate danger to anyone, authorities reassured at the time. Hillsb

Pentagon bans 60mm mortar round after Marine deaths

A mortar shell explosion killed seven Marines and injured seven more during mountain warfare training in Nevada's high desert, prompting the Pentagon to immediately halt the use of the weapons until an investigation can determine their safety, officials said Tuesday. The explosion occurred Monday night at the Hawthorne Army Depot, a sprawling facility used by troops heading overseas, during an exercise involving the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force from Camp Lejeune, N.C. Several Marines from the unit were injured in the blast, authorities said. The Marines were practicing firing mortars, reports CBS affiliate KTVN-TV in Reno, when one of the rounds exploded while still inside the tube. Brig. Gen. Jim Lukeman said investigators were trying to determine the cause of the malfunction. The Pentagon expanded a temporary ban to prohibit the military from firing any 60 mm mortar rounds until the results of the investigation. The Marine Corps said Tuesday a "blanket suspension" of

Sinkhole swallows pond

Sinkhole swallows pond, There was something missing when Mark Korb went outside Sunday morning. Most notably, the giant pond that had once been in his yard, which was now a gaping crater in the ground. The Newcastle, Calif., man says the manmade pond on his property fell into a sinkhole that sucked it up in a matter of hours. The speed at which the underground cavity devoured the pond was staggering. Korb noted, by contrast, for instance, that when he drained the pond years ago with a pump the process took seven days. A geology professor from nearby Sierra College attributed the sinkhole to old mining activity or a preexisting fracture rather than groundwater dissolving material.
