A day in the life of a... face: Photo diary charts the changes from stressed school

7am Meet my morning face. My four-year-old daughter calls it 'foldy' - and it's only going to get worse. Today is Wednesday - and, according to a new study on how our faces change from hour to hour and day to day, by 3.30pm I'll be looking the ropiest I do all week. A beauty editor friend of mine claims morning faces are less wrinkled than in the afternoon, because lying down means gravity lets up a little overnight. I'm not convinced. This looks like the face of someone who belongs on a 'Wanted' poster and who clearly needs to go back to bed for an hour or two. And where did the random eyebrow spot come from? Those bags under my eyes are awful, too - and that's after a full night's sleep! Wrinkles, bags and spots - now that's just downright unfair. All the clean school uniform I carefully laid out last night has mysteriously vanished. My seven-year-old son Jed claims this is the work of the uniform troll. I can feel my wrinkles deepening.

Beauty confidential: Sexy, flattering and utterly dependable

LOVE AT FIRST SWIPE Maybelline Great Lash Mascara, £4.99 (Boots) I discovered this product the first time I went on holiday to America in 1997, when it was the must-have mascara on everyone’s shopping list. It is still one of the brand’s bestsellers, after launching in the UK in the Nineties. I never spend a lot on mascara — even the most expensive brands flake and smudge. And as you are supposed to throw them out after two months (the brush harbours germs) this is the purse-friendly choice. The look of love: Because some beauty products are much sexier than others... (and work better too!) A BRUSH WITH ROMANCE Bobbi Brown Brush Set, £142 (bobbibrown.co.uk) I use my personalised Bobbi Brown make-up brushes every day. It doesn’t matter how much money you spend on make-up, if you don’t have the right tools to apply it, you’ll never get the same results. The ones I use most are the long-handled powder brush (which I use for bronzer and blusher) and the Eye Smudge brush, which helps
