New York mayoral hopeful Quinn opens up about overcoming bulimia

New York City mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn spoke out on Tuesday about her decade-long struggle with bulimia and alcohol abuse after her mother's death from breast cancer. "It was such a challenging time, and it was a time where everything was just bad," Quinn, the speaker of the New York City Council, told an audience at Barnard College. "I thought I was the only 16-year-old girl in the world who had no ability to deal with her mother dying."   Quinn, who in polls is leading a crowded field of Democratic candidates running to succeed Michael Bloomberg, would be the city's first lesbian and female mayor. Her personal history is well known, but her comments marked the first time Quinn, who was elected council speaker in 2006, has so directly addressed her emotional unraveling after her mother's death in 1982. In a New York Times article on Tuesday, Quinn said that eating and purging and drinking excessively had become habits by the time she enter

DiCaprio's wildlife charity auction brings in $38.8 million

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Christie's auction house raised $38.8 million through a charity art auction and donations, Christie's said on Tuesday, with proceeds to benefit environmental and conservation causes. The 33 works in The 11th Hour Auction organized by the star of the new film "The Great Gatsby" sold for $31.74 million on Monday evening and set 13 records for artists including Carol Bove, Joe Bradley, Mark Grotjahn, Raymond Pettibon and Mark Ryden among others.   A $5 million matching donation for three of the lots and additional gifts from donors brought the overall total to $38.8 million for The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, according to Christie's. "All I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you," DiCaprio told the audience at the end of the auction. Many of the works, which were created for and donated to the auction by the artists, sold in spirited bidding in a packed auction house. Art collectors from around the globe also placed

Actress Gina Lollobrigida's diamonds fetch $4.9 million at auction

Diamond jewelry belonging to Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida sold for more than 4.74 million Swiss francs ($4.9 million) on Tuesday in Geneva and set a record for pearl earrings, auctioneer Sotheby's said. _0"> Lollobrigida, a leading sex symbol of the 1950s and 1960s, said she was selling the jewelry to raise money for stem cell research.   A pair of diamond and natural pearl earrings sold for 2.29 million francs ($2.37 million), an auction record. The earrings beat the $1.98 million figure set in 2011 from the sale of natural pearl and diamond earrings by Bulgari, owned by late actress Elizabeth Taylor. Other prized items from Lollobrigida's collection included a Bulgari necklace and bracelet combination, and a Bulgari ring featuring a 19.03-carat cushion-shaped diamond. Each fetched 749,000 francs ($776,056). The 85-year-old actress attended the auction and said she hoped the money raised would be put towards advancing stem cell research in Italy . "J

A Minute With: Zachary Quinto on 'Star Trek,' Spock and coming out

Actor Zachary Quinto has transitioned swiftly from a television villain into an unlikely action film star in J.J Abrams' rebooted "Star Trek" franchise, playing the series' most recognizable half-Vulcan, Spock. The 35-year-old actor, who gained fame as super-villain Sylar in sci-fi television series "Heroes," will reprise his role as the pointy-eared first officer of the starship Enterprise in "Star Trek Into Darkness," which will be released in theaters on Friday.   The actor spoke to Reuters about the challenges of playing Spock and why he chose to go public about being gay. Q: "Star Trek Into Darkness" has more action, set pieces and destinations than the 2009 reboot. Is that right? A: You're right. It's a larger scale version of the "Star Trek" story. The first one was about re-conceiving people's perceptions of "Star Trek," and trying to infuse it with new energy. The self-contained and more int

Kerry phones China over dissident's nephew, can't reach minister

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry tried calling Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to discuss the imprisoned nephew of blind Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng but Wang was not available, the State Department said on Friday. _0"> Wang was said to be in Singapore on Friday for meetings with senior officials there. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell told reporters Kerry had tried to call Wang Thursday and would follow up. Asked if he thought it odd that Wang was not available to speak to Washington's top diplomat, Ventrell suggested there was nothing unusual in Kerry's failure to connect with Wang. "Sometimes it's time differences or travel," Ventrell said. "Sometimes it takes us a little while to connect with a foreign minister." Kerry wants to discuss the case of Chen Kegui, who the New York-based rights group Human Rights Watch said had been diagnosed with appendicitis and "urgently needs effective medical care." The grou

Chinese dissident urges U.S. to ensure family's fair treatment

Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng called on the United States on Friday to ensure his family in China would be treated fairly, saying his imprisoned nephew was not receiving proper medical care from Chinese authorities, whom he accused of "hooligan tactics." Chen, who made international headlines last year when he escaped house arrest and spent 20 hours on the run before finding refuge at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, said his nephew was suffering from appendicitis and being treated only by a fellow inmate who had received some medical training. "He's not being given proper medical treatment or being taken to a medical facility outside the jail," Chen told Reuters in an interview, speaking through an interpreter. Chen, who was born blind and taught himself law, said China was using "ruffian, hooligan tactics to try and scare me into silence." He said his relatives had been increasingly harassed by Chinese authorities since mid-April, around the

Harvard professor apologizes for remarks on economist Keynes

Harvard historian Niall Ferguson posted an "unqualified apology" on his personal blog on Saturday after saying that British economist John Maynard Keynes did not care about the future because he was gay and had no children. _0"> The comments were "as stupid as they were insensitive," Ferguson wrote.   While speaking at a conference of investors in California on Thursday, Ferguson was asked to comment on Keynes' observation that "in the long run, we are all dead." He described his response as "off the cuff," and not part of his formal presentation. His comments were first reported in Financial Advisor magazine, which wrote that Ferguson described Keynes as an "effete" member of society who was more likely to discuss poetry with his wife than procreate. The magazine did not quote his full remarks directly. Keynes was an influential 20th-century economist who championed government's role in helping manage the econom

Vikings move QB: Minnesota shifts Webb to wide receiver position

The Minnesota Vikings move QB Joe Webb from his position as a backup to Christian Ponder, and he is now one of the team's full time wide receivers. According to ESPN on May 16, Matt Cassel will serve as the team's backup quarterback instead. At one time, Joe Webb was thought of as a serious contender to the starting quarterback role in Minnesota. After Brett Favre retired, it looked like he would get the chance but he never turned into a consistent option for the team, leading them to draft Florida State's Ponder. After making the playoffs last season, Ponder seems to be growing into his role. With Percy Harvin leaving the Vikings, that opens up a huge vacancy at the receiver position. Webb, always a multi-dimensional threat with his legs almost more valuable than his arm, was a nice fit to move to a wide-out spot. This isn't the first time a former starting quarterback moved to the receiver position, as both Antwaan Randle-El and Kordell Stewart made the moves in the

Mirren, dressed as queen, reads royal riot act to noisy drummers

Actress Helen Mirren has delivered another show-stopping performance as Britain's Queen Elizabeth after storming out of a London theatre dressed as the monarch to deliver an expletive-riddled tirade at a group of drummers ruining the play. _0"> Infuriated by loud drumming outside the Gielgud Theatre, where Mirren is portraying the queen in the play "The Audience", she burst out in full costume during the interval on Saturday night to tell them to shut up, with a few swear words thrown in for good measure. "I'm afraid there were a few 'thespian' words used. They got a very stern royal ticking off but I have to say they were very sweet and they stopped immediately," Mirren told the Daily Telegraph newspaper. Mirren, 67, who last month added the best actress gong at Britain's top theatre honors to the Academy Award she won for the 2006 film "The Queen", said the drumming had got so loud it was disturbing cast and theatre-goer

U.S. returning looted Tyrannosaurus skeleton to Mongolia

A 70-million-year-old dinosaur skeleton from the Gobi Desert that was smuggled to the United States in pieces and auctioned for more than $1 million was returned on Monday by the U.S. government to Mongolia. The huge Tyrannosaurus bataar's skull was on display at a repatriation ceremony near the United Nations in New York, where officials of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan and the U.S. Immigration and Customers Enforcement (ICE) formally turned over the nearly complete skeleton to Mongolian officials.   Mongolia demanded the return of the 8-foot-tall (2.4 meter), 24-foot-long (7.3 meter), mostly reconstructed cousin of the Tyrannosaurus rex last year after commercial paleontologist Eric Prokopi sold it at a Manhattan auction last spring for $1.05 million. Prokopi, based in Gainesville, Florida, bought and sold whole and partial fossilized dinosaur skeletons. U.S. authorities filed charges against Prokopi in October and seized the skeleton, which is comprised of f

Pat Robertson: Cheating man is the fault of the Wife dedication

Pat Robertson says cheating man is the fault of his wife. We here at Mediaite don’t claim to be psychiatrists but, generally speaking, when a person just can’t seem to forgive their spouse for adulterous behavior, there are usually several ways to proceed: Address any underlying trust issues with open conversation; split apart if the inability to forgive reflects a serious rift in the relationship; or… sweep everything under the rug and focus on changing your behavior so that the cheating spouse no longer feels the need to wander. Televangelist Pat Robertson seems to believe in the latter option. On today’s 700 Club, Robertson explained to a woman who couldn’t forgive her husband’s adultery that she should simply stop focusing on his cheating ways and instead focus on the positive aspects of their marriage. For instance, “Does he provide a home for you to live in? does he provide food for you to eat? does he provide clothes for you to wear?” Also: “Is he handsome?” As for the man’s cu

Authorities visited house in 2004 where Ohio women found: police

As three Cleveland women reunited with their families on Tuesday after vanishing for about a decade in their own neighborhood, police scoured the house they escaped from for clues on how they could be held captive for so long with no one noticing. Cleveland authorities said there was one attempt to visit the home in 2004 on an unrelated matter but no one answered the door. They said they combed through records and found no other calls to the house nor reports of anything amiss in the years the women were missing.   But neighbors said they had made more than one call to police about suspicious activity at the house. Amanda Berry, 27, who disappeared in April 2003, along with Gina DeJesus, 23, who vanished in 2004, and Michelle Knight, 32, who went missing in 2002, were held captive at the house. Rescued with them on Monday was a 6-year-old girl who police said was Berry's daughter. She would have been conceived and born during Berry's captivity. Israel Lugo, a neighbor,

British economy claims new victim: Prince Charles' veg shop

Britain's weak economy has taken its toll on the nation's poshest greengrocer with Prince Charles forced to close his organic vegetable store, citing falling trade and rising prices. _0"> Prince Charles, the heir to the throne and a champion of the environment, opened a store near to his country home Highgrove in Gloucestershire, south-west England, about eight years ago after converting his estate to organic farming in 1986.   The store, The Veg Shed, sold organic vegetables and fruit freshly grown on the estate's Duchy Home Farm and became known for selling edible but oddly shaped organic produce that would normally be rejected by supermarkets. But a spokeswoman for the prince said the store had closed after it failed to make a profit as it was no longer financially viable. The produce was invariably more expensive than at local supermarkets. "The Veg Shed has closed, basically in response to consumer trends, a preference for shopping remotely," a

Kelly Rowland jealous: Kelly Rowland reveals about Beyonce jealousy on new track

Kelly Rowland jealousy has opened up in a new song about the jealousy she felt towards her former bandmate and BFF Beyoncé, following her solo success after Destiny's Child split. The song, entitled Dirty Laundry , sees Rowland sing about overcoming feelings of jealous. The lyrics read: "When my sister was on stage/killing it like a motherf--ker/I was in rage/feeling it like a motherf-ker... Bird in a cafe/You'd never know what I was dealing with/Went our separate ways but I was happy she was killin' it/Bittersweet, she was up, I was down/No lie, I feel good for her but what do I do now?" The lyrics continue: "I was going through some bulls---/Post-Survivor, she on fire/Who wanna hear my bulls---/... I was battered/He hitting the window like it was me, until it shattered/He pulled me out and said, 'Don't nobody love you but me/Not your mama, not your daddy, and especially not Bey." However, the singer has since glossed over any problems

New book teaches children ABCs of Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc invests in dozens of businesses, and a new book tries to explain it all to young readers, from A to Z. Two Omaha residents, author Nancy Rips and illustrator Tom Kerr, have teamed up on "My First Berkshire ABC" to teach children about one of the world's best-known companies, and a little about the local billionaire behind it.   More than 1,000 copies were sold at Berkshire's annual meeting on Saturday, which draws thousands of people to Omaha, and where Buffett has a say on what gets sold. "You need something to bring home to your kids and grandkids to explain Berkshire," Rips, who has also written three books about Jewish holidays, said in a joint interview with Kerr. Most pages show companies that Berkshire owns or invests in. G, for example, is for "Geico," and features the car insurer's talking gecko. And W is for "Wells Fargo", and features the bank's familiar stagecoach. T

Arizona climber and his dog apparently stung to death by bees

An Arizona climber has been found dead, dangling from a rope on a cliff face south of Tucson, after apparently being stung to death by bees, police said on Wednesday. _0"> Steven Wallace Johnson, 55, a counselor with some 30 years experience hiking and climbing, headed into the mountains south of Tucson on Friday, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Tony Estrada said. Johnson was reported missing on Monday by co-workers after he failed to show up for work. A Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office search and rescue team found his body that afternoon, Estrada said. "He had been stung repeatedly and he was dangling there," he said.   "He was climbing the cliff and was about 70 feet up and still had about 80 feet to go, so he really didn't have anywhere to go when he was attacked by this swarm of bees," Estrada said. He said Johnson's dog had also been attacked by bees and was found dead nearby. The Pima County Medical Examiner's Office was conducting

Texas judge rules that cheerleaders may display Bible banners

A Texas judge on Wednesday ruled that the "Bible banners" waved by cheerleaders during football games in a small school district are constitutionally protected free speech and that the tradition will be allowed to continue. No law "prohibits the cheerleaders from using religious-themed banners at school sporting events," State District Judge Steven Thomas wrote in a two-page final ruling. He had temporarily ruled in favor of the cheerleaders in October. For generations it has been a tradition in Kountze, a town of 2,100 in the Piney Woods of east Texas, for cheerleaders to write Bible verses and religious messages - such as, "If God is with us, who can be against us?" - on large sheets of paper. The football players run through the banners when they take the field for home games. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Wisconsin-based group that promotes the separation of church and state, sent the Kountze superintendent a letter last fall, complaini

China probes reports of film director Zhang Yimou's seven children

Chinese authorities have begun investigating reports that Zhang Yimou, one of China's best-known movie directors, has seven children in violation of strict family planning rules, which could result in a fine of 160 million yuan ($26.05 million), state media said on Thursday. _0"> Online reports have surfaced that Zhang, who dazzled the world in 2008 with his Beijing Olympic ceremonies, "has at least seven children and will face a 160 million yuan fine," said the website of the People's Daily, the Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece. An unnamed official at the Wuxi Municipal Population and Family Planning Commission said "based on the current policies and regulations, an investigation is currently being carried out", according to the report. It is unclear where Zhang's children were born, the report said, citing a worker at the Jiangsu Province Population and Family Planning Commission.   Both the Wuxi and Jiangsu Population and Family Plann

Sophia top baby name for U.S. girls; Messiah and King on the rise for boys

Sophia tops the list of names for American baby girls for the second year in a row, while King and Messiah are becoming increasingly popular names for boys, the U.S. Social Security Administration said on Thursday. Jacob has become a standby for boys' names, topping that category for the 14th straight year. Liam and Elizabeth broke into the Top 10 at No. 6 and No. 10 respectively, the SSA said in a statement.   But rising on the list are a couple of less traditional, but more attention-grabbing names. Messiah was the fourth fastest-growing name for boys, rising to 387th in 2012 from the 633th spot in 2011, according to the federal agency. King became the seventh fastest-growing boy's name, reaching the 256th most popular spot in 2012, compared with 389th the year before, the agency said. "Bold names for boys are very hot right now," said Laura Wattenberg, creator of the website BabyNameWizard.com. "So for people who are appalled by the idea, most of us ar

Pat Robertson Cheating: Man should not be blame; it’s the wife’s fault!

Famed televangelist Pat Roberston is taking some heat this morning after telling a woman who wrote him for advice that her husband’s cheating was a “natural tendency,” and his wandering eye was actually her fault. The 700 Club host was responding a viewer identified as “Ivy” who had written Robertson looking for advice on how to forgive her cheating man. “We have gone to counseling, but I just can’t seem to forgive, nor can I trust. How do you let go of the anger? How do you trust again?” she wrote. Robertson’s response was direct and to the point; and has shocked some. “Here’s the secret,” he said. “Stop talking the cheating. He cheated on you, well, he’s a man.” He told the viewer rather than to focus on her husband’s faults, to be thankful for all the material wealth Robertson assumed he provides her. ‘Does he provide a home for you to live in,’ he said. ‘Does he provide food for you to eat? Does he provide clothes for you to wear? Is he nice to the children… Is he handsome?’

Too pretty label mars South Korean boxing starlet's win

When romantic actress Lee Si-young swapped her glamorous roles in South Korean dramas for boxing gloves in a bid to win an Olympic medal, her victories triggered a storm of protest that has marred her unexpected success in the ring. The 31-year-old, better known for her roles in TV shows such as "Wild Romance" and "Boys Before Flowers", had tears of joy in her eyes when she defeated 19-year-old Kim Da-som by 22 points to 20 in the 48 kg (106 lb) class at the South Korean national team tryouts in late April.   Her win, however, triggered a bitter battle in which the Korean Amateur Boxing Federation (KABF) was accused of giving Lee an unfair advantage in a bid to use her celebrity status to boost its fan base at the expense of the sweat and passion of her relatively unknown opponent. "The match was preposterously biased - if the umpire gave Lee Si-young's slaps on the wrist 22 points, then Kim should have been given at least 50 points," Byun Hee-ja

Russian boy,7, kills brother,4, with grandfather's rifle

A 7-year-old Russian boy told investigators he had shot and killed his 4-year-old brother by accident with their grandfather's rifle on Sunday, law enforcement authorities said. _0"> The boy said he and his brother had found the gun under a bed in their grandparents' house in the Siberian town of Bukachacha and were playing with it on the porch while the adults slept, the federal Investigative Committee said.   The boy said he accidentally pulled the trigger while trying to take the gun out of his younger brother's hands, the committee said. Authorities earlier said they suspected someone had shot the younger boy from outside the enclosed porch. The Investigative Committee said authorities would open a criminal case, apparently against the grandfather, on suspicion of illegal possession of an unregistered rifle. Vikings move QB: Joe Webb To Full-Time Receiver Slot

Vikings move QB: Minnesota Vikings have moved QB Joe Webb to a full-time wide receiver slot as the debate behind the team’s quarterback dilemma now comes to a close. Head coach Leslie Frazier announced the decision to move Webb to the outside on Wednesday. Webb’s been an NFL backup quarterback since joining the league in 2010. The Birmingham, Alabama native’s last start, on the other hand, came in the Vikings wild-card appearance last season. He was given the start due to an injury to Christian Ponder near the end of the season. The Vikings went on to lose the game 24-10 to the Green Bay Packers and Webb’s stat line didn’t add up to a future starting role. The 26-year completed just 11-of-30 passes in the game for 180 yards with one touchdown and an interception. His struggles throwing the football should have been expected as his last pass in an official game before the wild-card came during the Vikings’ season finale against the Chicago Bears in 2011. Now the Vikings move QB Joe We

Netanyahu takes flak over bed on a plane

Benjamin Netanyahu is changing his mid-air sleeping arrangements after a public flap over a $127,000 custom-built bedroom for the Israeli prime minister and his wife on a flight to London last month. _0"> Israel's Channel 10 television reported the sum was tagged onto the $300,000 cost of chartering an El Al Boeing 767 that flew the couple and Netanyahu's entourage of aides and bodyguards to former British leader Margaret Thatcher's funeral.   News of the extra public expenditure, for a 5-1/2-hour flight, caused an outcry on Israel's social media and in its mainstream newspapers that coincided with protests over government plans to raise taxes as part of an austerity budget. "Bibi is king, and in a monarchy, when the king and queen fly, price is no object," said political commentator Sima Kadmon, referring to the prime minister by his nickname. "Where is the shame?" she wrote on the front page of Yedioth Ahronoth, Israel's biggest

Michelin for the masses: Japan's standing restaurants head for New York

Japan's popular standing restaurants, where patrons eat food by former Michelin restaurant chefs for a fraction of the cost at a seated-restaurant, are about to hit New York. Michio Yasuda, an executive director at ORENO Corporation, which owns and runs 18 restaurants in Tokyo, hopes New Yorkers who are happy to drink while standing at bars will also be happy to eat while standing. "Only a tiny portion of people can afford to eat at Michelin starred restaurants but those who earn a modest income should also be able to try high quality food," said Yasuda.   In Tokyo's standing restaurants, which include French and Italian establishments in the posh Ginza district, diners can enjoy dishes like tender beef tournedos with foie gras, with an average meal costing about 4,000 yen ($39.30), around the cost of drinks and snacks at a simple Japanese-style pub. Now, ORENO Corporation plans to open a standing, gourmet Japanese restaurant in New York, taking aim at diners w

Chef killed over meal: Japan chef killed over meal dispute in Germany

A Japanese chef was killed over a meal in Germany believed to be have died of a brain hemorrhage, and police are working to put together an account of events that led to the violent and ultimately fatal beating of 57-year-old Miki Nozawa. Initial reports from German tabloid Bild-Zeitung indicate the chef killed over a meal was a well-regarded specialist in Japanese-Italian fusion food. Nozawa died Monday despite doctors’ efforts to save his life after the attack, and a trouble picture of the chef’s last hours began to emerge. According to German police, the attack occurred on the German island of Sylt. Nozawa had served two men, aged 36 and 50, described as “laborers” in press accounts. The chef killed over the meal reportedly served the two men, who haven’t been identified in media reports, a dish of beef and fried noodles — and the pair didn’t care for their meals. What happened next was unpleasant but not entirely uncommon in restaurant settings. The two dis

Eating insects could help fight obesity, U.N. says

The thought of eating beetles, caterpillars and ants may give you the creeps, but the authors of a U.N. report published on Monday said the health benefits of consuming nutritious insects could help fight obesity. More than 1,900 species of insects are eaten around the world, mainly in Africa and Asia, but people in the West generally turn their noses up at the likes of grasshoppers, termites and other crunchy fare.   The authors of the study by the Forestry Department, part of the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), said many insects contained the same amount of protein and minerals as meat and more healthy fats doctors recommend in balanced diets. "In the West we have a cultural bias, and think that because insects come from developing countries, they cannot be good," said scientist Arnold van Huis from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, one of the authors of the report. Eva Muller of the FAO said restaurants in Europe were starting to offer insect-b

New fitness centers cater to aging baby boomers

Baby boomers, the generation that vowed to stay forever young, are getting older, designing senior-friendly gyms and becoming their own personal trainers. In exercise havens for the over-50 set, the cardio machines are typically low impact, the resistance training is mainly air-powered and some group fitness classes are taken sitting down. At Welcyon gyms, founded by husband-and-wife boomers Suzy and Tom Boerboom, the average age of members is 62. "The environment is really designed for those 50 and over," said Suzy Boerboom. The couple created Welcyon, which has locations in Minnesota and South Dakota, in 2009. It has no tread-mills and no free weights and workouts are customized to members' levels of fitness. A smart card sets resistance, counts repetitions and adjusts workouts.   An important attraction for many boomers: background music is a combination of '40s, '50s and '60s tunes played at a much lower volume than in traditional gyms. "It w

Chef killed over meal: Customers kill Chef over a meal on the German holiday island

Japanese chef Miki Nozawa has been killed over a meal on the German holiday island of Sylt, according to a May 16 news.com.au report. Chefs have to stand behind their meals, and popular Japanese chef Miki Nozawa, who did and was involved in an altercation over a dish of fried noodles, has died from the resulting confrontation. In an altercation that started at a German restaurant and continued at a nightclub, Nozawa suffered serious injuries and was rushed to an intensive care unit at a local hospital. Despite the medical team's best efforts, the 57-year-old chef died from his injuries. An autopsy is now being conducting to determine the exact cause of death, authorities said Tuesday. Local police have identified two suspects in the incident, and are currently hunting a 36-year-old and a 50-year-old. The news has stunned locals, and according to local media reports, the argument between the chef and the duo was sparked by a dish of fried noodles that contained beef and vegetables

Astronaut's 'Space Oddity' music video goes viral

A music video shot aboard the International Space Station went viral on Monday, turning an astronaut into an overnight music sensation with his zero-gravity version of David Bowie's hit "Space Oddity." As the first Canadian to command the space station, a $100 million project of 15 nations, Chris Hadfield had already earned himself a place in the history books.   But as he prepared to return home on Monday after more than five months in orbit, Hadfield released a poignant "cyberspace" rendition of Bowie's song, which was first released in 1969 just ahead of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The video, with its familiar refrain "Ground Control to Major Tom," had more than 1.5 million hits on YouTube early Monday afternoon and was being touted as the first music video ever filmed in space. Complete with re-worked lyrics and high quality footage that Hadfield and his crew mates shot aboard the orbital outpost, the video shows the astronaut singing ab
