Nicola Cortese, Txiki Begiristain and Ferran Soriano are seizing the moment at clubs - MARTIN SAMUEL

Nicola Cortese is the chairman of Southampton. Hold on to that fact because in the age of the owner-manager it is easy to become confused. Cortese has spent the last week holding his club, the club he runs, to ransom. There have been veiled threats, there have been carefully floated ultimatums, there has been disruption and wild talk of disintegration. Not from his lips, obviously, but informed sources. Nothing was ever denied and in the end, he got what he wanted. If Cortese were Wayne Rooney or Harry Redknapp, a figure from the sweaty end of football’s market place, he would no doubt have been  pilloried. As he wears a suit, his brinkmanship passes without comment. Holding to ransom? Nicola Cortese, chairman of Southampton, eventually got what he wanted from the club     More from Martin Samuel...   Martin Samuel: How my dad got wi

Darius Rucker Shoots Down Racist Tweet With a Few Words of His Own. The incident began when one user, whose account has now been deactivated, tweeted “@dariusrucker Leave country to the white folk.” Darius Rucker responded to the tweet saying, “WOW. Is this 2013 or 1913” and added “I'll take my Grand Ole Opry membership and leave your racism.” The original tweet poster did not reply, but the post definitely had others talking. When asked by one fan why he even acknowledged the original tweet, Darius Rucker said he did it so the world could see them. Rucker's foray into country has been met with mixed reviews, but his fans still support him. Rucker's Hootie & the Blowfish days may be behind him, as he has been working on his passion for country music for a while. His 2008 song “Don't Think I Don't Think About It” made him the first African American since 1983 to hit the top of the country charts, but based on this latest Twitter controversy, not everybody is sup

Gareth Bale is off to the Bahamas on Tottenham's post-season tour

Gareth Bale is off… to The Bahamas. The Tottenham star is understood to be part of Andre Villas-Boas’ squad for a post-season tour to the Caribbean islands, which features an exhibition match against Jamaica on Thursday. Spurs fly to the Bahamas today after missing out on qualification for next season’s Champions League, despite Sunday’s 1-0 win over Sunderland, which featured another stunning Bale goal. Villas-Boas remains confident the Welshman, 23, will sign a new £150,000-a-week contract and extend his spell at White Hart Lane, but Real Madrid are among the clubs lurking to sign the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year and the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year. Differing faces: Gareth Bale scored another wonder goal against Sunderland, despite showing incredulity at being booked for diving when he felt he was felled in the penalty area (below) Speaking in a conference call with local media in the Bahamas, Villas-Boas said: ‘Gareth is going to travel with the

Darius Rucker racist tweet controversy: 'Spare country to the white folk'

The Darius Rucker racist tweet controversy has definitely gotten people buzzing. These days Rucker is focused on the country music genre, but it seems not everybody is embracing his work. Rather than throw in the towel, Rucker is fighting back. Yahoo! Music shared the details on May 20. The incident began when one user, whose account has now been deactivated, tweeted “@dariusrucker Leave country to the white folk.” Darius Rucker responded to the tweet saying, “WOW. Schwarzenegger Shriver: Divorce not been finalized, Not even in a hurry

Schwarzenegger Shriver divorce has not happened yet and for now it is believed they are not in a hurry to finally end things. According to TMZ on May 21, neither Arnold Schwarzenegger nor Maria Shriver are in a rush to divorce. Schwarzenegger and Shriver's divorce was imminent after the news that Arnold had cheated on her with their housekeeper and it turned out the Arnold had a son from the relationship. The two seemed like they were trying to make it work, but things eventually finally fell apart. What makes this strange is that the Schwarzenegger Shriver divorce is already worked out, the two are worth $400 million and have agreed to split everything down the middle. However, there is no hurry to sign the papers because neither individual is in need of the divorce proceedings. TMZ reports that another reason they have not signed the papers yet is because there is a chance they may still get back together. This comes as a shock, as Schwarzenegger has a girlfriend right now. GRAHAM POLL: My Barclays Premier League end of season round-up

Best decision Mark Clattenburg’s detection and swift action to dismiss West Bromwich Albion’s Goran Popov who displayed all that is wrong with the Premier League at The Hawthorns in February. After an innocuous challenge from Tottenham’s Kyle Walker, Popov clearly spat at the defender and was immediately shown the red card. Spitting at an opponent is a disgusting and cowardly act and has rightly been given its own category within law 12. Disgusting: Popov's spit towards Walker showed all that is wrong with the Premier League Worst decision Mike Jones was the referee who denied Luis Suarez a clear penalty when he was brought down by Norwich City’s Leon Barnett as he bore down on goal at the end of September. It was one of the easiest decisions of the season and yet Jones, a competent referee, waved appeals away. The fact that it was Suarez again leaves one wondering if his reputation as a player who goes down too easily is affecting referees' decision making. Howler:

Darius Rucker tweet: Singer responded to the racist tweet

Darius Rucker tweet: Singer responded to the racist tweet. Darius Rucker, formerly of Hootie And The Blowfish, has found a hit in his version of the old Dylan song “Wagon Wheel”. But some aren’t impressed with his rendition, apparently, and one naysayer took to Twitter to call him out on his move to country in a pretty despicable way. User PQKullman wrote, “Leave country to the white folk,” to which Rucker replied, “WOW… is this 2013 or 1913? Ill take my grand ole Opry membership and leave your racism. Wow.”  Webpro Reports It’s unfortunate that Rucker had to be on the receiving end of such a negative country fan, but he appears to be taking it all in stride. He later tweeted: When one of Rucker’s followers commented, “Bet he wouldn’t say that to Nelly’s face,” Rucker shot back, “?Wouldn’t say it to mine, either.” And he makes a good point; social media sites, while good places to connect with people, are also havens for those who know they can hide behind a screen name. Rafa Benitez warns Jose Mourinho: Roman Abramovich runs Chelsea

Rafa Benitez has warned incoming Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho that Roman Abramovich will be running the show when he returns next season. The interim Chelsea boss, who won the Europa League and led the club to third place in the Barclays Premier League, insists Abramovich is the boss at Stamford Bridge. Benitez said: 'The most important person at the club is Roman Abramovich. On the way out: Rafa Benitez will leave Chelsea after the club's friendlies with Manchester City 'It will be good for the next manager because he will have a very good team and the owner will bring in new players. 'This is a top side challenging for trophies playing two games a week - this team will challenge for the title next year. 'You take a team in transition, with young players, and now we have left a good team with more experience, more character, scoring goals with more balance.' Bring back Jose: Chelsea fans show their support for Mourinho (below) who is expected to re

Andy Carroll latest: Signing him must be West Ham's main priority - Sam Allardyce

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce would love to build his team around Andy Carroll next season - and maintains signing the England forward on a permanent deal from Liverpool must be the club’s 'main priority' over the summer. The 24-year-old played the final match of his season-long loan in yesterday’s 4-2 win over relegated Reading at Upton Park, where captain Kevin Nolan netted a hat-trick. Carroll was a thorn in Reading’s side all afternoon, despite not being able to add to his seven goals to mark his recall to the England squad for the friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil. Main man: Andy Carroll must the priority for West Ham as they enter the summer, says Sam Allardyce   Allardyce believes having Carroll on board next season would provide the perfect platform on which to build from their creditable 10th place after avoiding joining Reading back in the npower Championship. 'If we can start with Andy Carroll that would be a great achievement f
