Many people try to bravely soldier on when they have the flu but new research has shown it really would be best - for both them and their employer - if they stayed home. Staff who take two days off work when sick with the flu reduce the risk of their colleagues getting the bug by 40 per cent, a study has found. And the simulated flu epidemic showed that even having just one day off was still beneficial - cutting workplace transmissions of the virus by 25 per cent. Pico Rivera Crash: Eye-Witness Said ‘I Saw Bodies Everywhere’

A Pico Rivera crash late on Thursday was so horrific that witnesses say they are having a difficult time dealing with the aftermath. The head-on crash took place near the San Gabriel River Parkway and Rose Hills Road, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said. A 22-year-old man in a Honda Civic crossed into the southbound lanes, striking a Nissan Sentra. Three children in the back of the Civic were thrown from the vehicle. Two of them died, along with the driver of the Civic. One of the boys killed was said to have just graduated from sixth grade earlier that day. The third child thrown in the Pico Rivera crash was taken to the hospital and listed in critical condition . Two women in the Sentra were also taken to the hospital, but not listed in serious condition. The crash left destruction along the highway so extensive that witnesses found it scarring. “I saw bodies everywhere and I was just trying to help the kids. I stayed with one, he was breathing, but by the time they go

My 6ft 5in Lithuanian builder's taken five months to paint my windows. But tape record him? Rather you than me

Thirteen weeks have passed since I put my foot firmly down and insisted that we should employ dear old Marius, the Lithuanian, to paint our outside doors and window frames. My wife had taken a shine to a rival bidder, who seemed more of a perfectionist. But his quotation for the job - including fixed scaffolding, which Marius said we wouldn't need - was nearly £1,000 more. Money is money, after all. And anyway, I've always liked Marius, since we first employed him more than ten years ago, when he was in his mid-20s and a new arrival on our shores. The new laws will allow people to record conversations with tradesmen to ensure they stick to their word Apart from a recommendation from a neighbour, I had been drawn to him by the name of his company, All Your Bits And Bobs, whose breezy colloquialism suggested an affection for his adopted country and an eagerness to fit in. All right, Marius may have cut the occasional corner over the odd jobs he has done around our house si

School offers pupils £200 bribe just to get a C at GCSE but high-fliers will get nothing

A school is offering some pupils a £200 bribe to pass English and maths exams. But the bonus will be paid only to children predicted to get a D grade at GCSE who achieve at least a C in both subjects. The scheme, at Oldbury Academy in the West Midlands, was criticised last night for promoting mediocrity by focusing on C grades – the standard by which a school’s performance in league tables is measured. Pupils at Oldbury Academy in the West Midlands are being offered cash bribes to do better in their GCSEs It has also been attacked as divisive because it excludes high-achieving pupils as well as those who are expected to fail but who instead end up with a good pass. The controversial policy is understood to apply to 49 Year 11 pupils sitting GCSEs this summer – at a potential cost of £9,800. Last year 60 per cent of pupils there who sat the exams achieved a C grade or higher, compared with a national average for state-funded schools of 56.1 per cent.   More... 'We don

Size matters most in the changing room: Men are more concerned about what their mates think of their manhood than their partner

Most men are more concerned about how they measure up against their male friends than what their girlfriends think of their penis size, a new study has found. While most men insisted it's not size that counts in the bedroom department, many admitted to still feeling insecure about how they compared to their male friends. Victoria University Doctorate of Clinical Psychology graduate Dr Annabel Chan Feng Yi carried out an online study of 738 men about their body image. She found most of the men, aged between 18 and 76, were insecure about their weight, build and even their penis size. But instead of being concerned over what their girlfriend's may think of their physique, many admitted it mattered most what their friends thought. Dr Chan said: 'Men's pre-occupation with size was rarely to do with pleasing sexual partners or even appearing as a better sexual partner. 'It was often more about competition with other men. Many felt most insecure about their size in e
