Watch SpaceX boat capture falling payload fairing in giant net

SpaceX just plucked another payload fairing from the sky, and you can see video of the stunning cosmic catch. The net-equipped SpaceX boat GO Ms. Tree snagged half of a declining payload fairing Tuesday (Aug. 18), shortly following a two-stage Falcon 9 rocket launched 58 Starlink internet satellites and three Earth-observation spacecraft into orbit. Payload fairings would be the shrouds that shield satellites during launch. SpaceX fairings come in two pieces, both of which come back to Earth beneath parachutes at a guided manner, as a result of little thrusters. Such tech assists reuse and recovery of their fairings, which cost about $6 million annually, SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has said. GO Ms. Tree and its sister ship, GO Ms. Chief, are a part of this picture too. Seawater is extremely corrosive, so snatching fairing halves from the sky makes refurbishment easier, Musk has stated. The ships have snagged a small number of fairings up to now, including a double capture during t

Mars missions finish first class corrections on travel to Red Planet

Three robotic Mars missions launched from Earth last month have begun fine-tuning their trajectories through the solar system with the very first in a series mid-course corrections to take aim on the Red Earth for coming next February. NASA's Mars 2020 Perseverance rover launched from Cape Canaveral on July 30, after successful launchings with the United Arab Emirates' Hope orbiter July 19 and China's Tianwen 1 Mars assignment July 23. The missions launched during a period of many weeks when Earth and Mars were in the right places in their orbits round the sun to allow a direct path between the planets. All three spacecraft are expected to arrive at Mars at February 2021. The spacecraft fired eight thrusters to adjust its path toward Mars, beginning to shift the probe's initial post-launch aim point on into the Red Planet. The assignment's Atlas 5 launcher intentionally introduced the Mars 2020 spacecraft on a path that would miss Mars, ensuring the rocket's up

Car-sized asteroid flew within 2,000 kilometers of Earth, the closest ever recorded, and NASA missed it

On Aug. 16, a space rock the size of a car zipped past Earth at a distance too close for comfort - roughly 1,830 miles. What is even more disconcerting is that NASA never watched it after it had happened. A report by Business Insider cited, it was the closest ever recorded, according to asteroid trackers along with a catalog compiled by Sormano Astronomical Observatory in Italy. The report said the space rock, because of its size, probably wouldn't have posed any danger to individuals on the floor had it struck our planet. However, it noted that"the close call is worrisome yet, because astronomers had no idea the asteroid existed till later it passed ." "The asteroid approached undetected by the management of the sun," Paul Chodas, the manager of NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies, told Business Insider. "We did not see it coming." The space rock was initially discovered, about six hours after it flew by Earth, by the Palomar Observatory i
