Party disavows Kansas candidate who admitted to revenge porn

TOPEKA, Kan. - The Kansas Democratic Party on Wednesday declared that the 19-year-old nominee for a state House seat is "unfit" for office because of "alarming behavior" that includes admitting to circulating revenge porn, and he said his online fundraising account has been disabled. Chairwoman Vicki Hiatt said the state party is working with the Kansas House's top Democrat, Minority Leader Tom Sawyer, to find an alternative to nominee Aaron Coleman in a normally safe Democratic district in Kansas City, Kansas. Coleman defeated seven-term state Rep. Stan Frownfelter in the Aug. 4 primary by 14 votes out of about 1,600 cast. Frownfelter has launched a write-in campaign, and Sawyer, from Wichita, said Democratic lawmakers are supporting it. Sawyer also said that if Coleman wins the November general election, Democrats are likely to launch an effort to keep him from being seated. Many Democrats have disavowed Coleman, a dishwasher and community college student, ov

ANDREW PIERCE: Strewth... a fireman used to hot water! Quite what Brussels will make of the new Brexit trade envoy remains to be seen

As excuses to cancel dinner go, the text message sent by Tony Abbott to a British friend newly arrived in Sydney is hard to beat. 'Sorry to do this at short notice, mate, but I'm trying to put out these damned bush fires.' He wasn't joking. The former Australian leader and volunteer fireman had flown hundreds of miles to New South Wales after record-breaking temperatures and severe drought triggered massive fires that raged for months last summer. It was in accordance with Abbott's swashbuckling style. For years, Australian politicians have scrupulously avoided being photographed on the beach in anything other than the baggiest of board shorts. Not Abbott. Australian politicians have avoided being photographed on the beach in anything other than baggy board shorts - but not Tony Abbott. He is pictured at the Great Aussie Swim in 2012 In 2009, the then leader of the opposition centre-right Liberal party appeared in a pair of 'budgie smugglers' – tight Speedos

Look familiar? The Bachelor is busted recreating the same fencing date from Ali Oetjen's season of The Bachelorette for Locky Gilbert and Irena Srbinovska

Viewers of The Bachelor were treated to an innuendo-filled fencing date between Locky Gilbert and Irena Srbinovska on Wednesday. And it turns out that it's not the first time that this style of date has been used on the show, with Ali Oetjen and Todd King doing the same activity on The Bachelorette in 2018. 'I'm sure it'll be fun getting poked around with Locky's sword today,' Irena giggled in the scene. Fun: Viewers of The Bachelor were treated to an innuendo-filled fencing date between Locky Gilbert and Irena Srbinovska on Wednesday Locky told Irena that she makes him 'feel so good' when they're together, and she replied: 'Yeah, it's strange, because I feel the same way.' Irena then asked Locky if he was open to having children, and he responded: 'I love kids, absolutely love kids. Being a dad would be so much fun.' He added: 'It's so crazy how quick I've gained feelings for you. Every time I look at you, I just feel

STEPHEN GLOVER: The unsackable class who truly govern us... these civil servants are highly remunerated, not infrequently incompetent - and although they run large parts of the country, we have little idea of who they are

The wicked old Soviet Union had a privileged administrative class. By Soviet standards they were well paid, and the lucky ones got dachas — cushy second homes.  These unaccountable bureaucrats were called the nomenklatura. Although Britain is a parliamentary democracy, we have developed our own nomenklatura.  They are highly remunerated and not infrequently incompetent. Although they run large parts of the country, we have little idea of who they are. On Tuesday, Sally Collier stood down as chief executive of Ofqual after it had issued downgraded exam results for hundreds of thousands of pupils as a result of its flawed algorithm It’s very hard to sack members of this administrative elite and, if unusually they are got rid of, they are liable to pop up in another highly paid job in a different quango, or else receive a whopping pay-off. Incidentally, the acronym ‘quango’ is a misnomer. Many of them are not quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations.  It’s the ‘non-governmental’ bi

No charges over Tanya Day custody death

No charges will be laid against Victorian police involved in the death in custody of Yorta Yorta woman Tanya Day. A coronial investigation found the grandmother's death was clearly preventable. The 55-year-old died in hospital more than two weeks after she repeatedly fell and hit her head in a Castlemaine police station. She was arrested for being drunk on a train in December 2017. Coroner Caitlin English in April referred Ms Day's death to prosecutors, saying there was evidence to suggest it may have amounted to negligent manslaughter. Victoria Police now say charges will not be laid against the officers involved, following advice from the Office of Public Prosecutions. Ms Day's family are devastated and angry. "The two police officers who failed to properly check on our mum and instead left her to die on the floor of a police cell have been let off," the family said in a statement released through the Human Rights Law Centre late on Wednesday night. "Our mu

WNBA postpones Wednesday games

All three WNBA games scheduled for Wednesday were postponed because players opted not to participate in the games. The first contest Wednesday evening between the Washington Mystics and the Atlanta Dream was canceled because the Mystics decided they didn't want to play. The boycott follows the lead of players in the NBA, who chose not to play in any of the three scheduled playoff games near Orlando in the aftermath of the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wis. on Sunday. For an hour before the game, players from both teams discussed how to approach the situation. It was originally thought that the game would be played, but after Washington went into the locker room, the team decided not to play. Before the game, Washington players had arrived wearing T-shirts that spelled out Jacob Blake and featured seven red bullet holes in the back, signifying the number of times he was shot by a police officer. He remained hospitalized on Wednesday. --Field Level Media

UPDATE 1-Amazon faces new antitrust challenge from Indian online sellers -legal documents

By Aditya Kalra NEW DELHI, Aug 26 - A group of more than 2,000 online sellers has filed an antitrust case against Amazon in India, alleging the U.S. company favours some retailers whose online discounts drive independent vendors out of business, a legal filing seen by Reuters showed. The case presents a new regulatory challenge for Amazon in India, where it has committed $6.5 billion in investment but is battling a complex regulatory environment. In January, the Competition Commission of India had ordered an investigation of Amazon and rival Flipkart, owned by Walmart, over alleged violations of competition law and certain discounting practices, which Amazon is challenging, according to court filings. In the latest case, the All India Online Vendors Association, members of which sell goods on Amazon and Flipkart, allege Amazon engages in unfair business practices. Reuters was first to report the case filing on Wednesday. The group alleges that Amazon India's wholesale arm buys go

Wisconsin AG says police recovered a knife from the driver's side floor of Jacob Blake's car and confirms that ONE cop shot him seven times as they responded to 911 call from Blake's girlfriend

Jacob Blake, the black man shot in the back seven times in front of his three young children by Wisconsin police, had a knife in his posession, the Wisconsin Attorney General revealed. The Wisconsin Department of Justice provided some of the first details surrounding the police shooting on Wednesday, revealing Blake had a knife and the name of the officer who opened fire.  That knife was later recovered from the driver's side floorboard of his SUV, but it's unclear if Blake had it on him when he was talking to police.  Blake, a 29-year-old father of six, was shot multiple times in the back by Kenosha officers responding to a dispute at the scene on Sunday evening, sparking national outrage and heated protests decrying police brutality. Police were called to the scene at the 2800 block of 40th Street in Kenosha on Sunday after Blake's girlfriend 'reported that her boyfriend was present and was not supposed to be on the premises.' Officers tried to subdue him with a t

WNBA games postponed following shooting of Jacob Blake

The WNBA postponed its three games Wednesday night following the shooting of Jacob Blake over the weekend. The move came hours after the NBA decided to postpone its three playoff games with its players choosing to boycott in their strongest statement yet against racial injustice. "We know it´s a very emotional time for our players. They are struggling with what´s been happening in this country for months, if not yearss," said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who said the league supports its players decision to not play Wednesday night. In Bradenton, Florida, in the WNBA bubble, Washington was set to play Atlanta, Minnesota was going to face Los Angeles, and Connecticut was going to meet Phoenix.
