Boris Johnson's No Deal hint: Prime Minister fear getting a trade deal is looking 'very difficult' as EU digs in over fishing and state aid

Downing Street last night warned that striking a Brexit trade deal will now be ‘very difficult’ unless Brussels drops its demands over fishing and state aid. The EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier travelled to London yesterday for informal talks with UK counterpart David Frost amid growing gloom about the chances of a breakthrough. Formal talks will resume next week, but ministers warn privately that, with the two sides still far apart, there is little sign of progress with only a month left to strike a deal.  Failure to reach an agreement by the beginning of October would mean the UK leaving without a deal when the Brexit transition period finishes at the end of this year.  The EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier (pictured right) travelled to London yesterday for informal talks with UK counterpart David Frost (pictured left) amid growing gloom about the chances of a breakthrough The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said a deal was ‘still possible and still our goal’, but added:

Pregnant woman is allegedly assaulted by a man who started 'randomly punching members of the public'

A man is accused of randomly assaulting several people on a Wollongong street, including a pregnant woman. About 11.45am on Tuesday officers from Wollongong Police District were patrolling Corrimal Street, Wollongong, when they came across a man allegedly punching members of the public. A man is accused of randomly assaulting several people on a Wollongong street, including a pregnant woman Police have been told the man approached a woman - who is seven months pregnant - and deliberately barged into her, knocking her into a fence. No one was injured as a result of the incident. A 46-year-old man was arrested and taken to Wollongong Hospital for assessment, before being taken to Wollongong Police Station, where he was charged with common assault. The man was refused bail and will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Wednesday.

We've got EU on the hook: More than 80 per cent of all English Channel cod is caught by French boats (yes, really). So as we wrangle over fishing rights in the latest talks, former MEP DANIEL HANNAN argues that we have the upper hand

Even after all this time, they still don’t understand us. The European Union clearly expects Britain, once again, to surrender its fishing grounds and betray its coastal communities for the sake of a wider, post-Brexit free trade agreement with Brussels. Why else would the EU’s lead negotiator, Michel Barnier, display such intransigence as a no-deal scenario looms closer? Rather than banking the uncontroversial parts of a UK-EU free trade deal, Barnier, who arrived in London yesterday for last-ditch talks, insists that a UK ‘cave-in’ on fisheries is a pre-condition for agreement on, well, anything else. After all, as Eurocrats keep assuring one another, fishing accounts for barely 0.1 per cent of the UK economy. Ruinous Is it really conceivable, they ask, that Boris Johnson will jeopardise the interests of Britain’s banking, insurance and investment industries for the sake of what has become almost a heritage industry? They choose to ignore the reality that no British government could

Kanye West tells Nick Cannon he spent $50 MILLION on his Sunday Service in 2019... after denying claims the GOP is bankrolling his White House bid

IAN HERBERT: Sportspeople are no longer afraid to have their say on matters beyond their sphere... in the world of PR they talk about 'authenticity' and Marcus Rashford brings that in abundance

The influence that Marcus Rashford wields extends way beyond his campaign to put food on the tables of those struggling with the stigma attached to asking others for help. A message to the family of a six-year-old who died when he was hit by a car while riding his bike. Recognition of a child's school project, sent in by the boy's mother. Thanks to warehouse staff delivering food to those in need. The responses to his tweets on these subjects range from 31,000 to 82,000. Some perspective here. The Prime Minister's tweet on the reasons to 'get kids back to school' had garnered around 9,500 responses on Tuesday night. Marcus Rashford is using his social media following to help tackle serious issues off the pitch The concept they all talk about in the world of lobbying and PR is 'authenticity' and Rashford — who has now formed a taskforce with some of the UK's biggest food brands to try to help reduce child food poverty — brings it in abundance. He was born
