A man has admitted trying to kill two elderly women in horrific and 'motiveless' knife attacks - stabbing one of them nine times, and cutting the throat of the other. Jayden Hayes, 24, struck twice in Oldham, Greater Manchester, in separate incidents three weeks apart. He pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder at Manchester Crown Court. Nearly 6,000 Afghan civilians were killed or wounded in the first nine months of the year as heavy fighting between government forces and Taliban insurgents rages on despite efforts to find peace, a new United Nations report has found.
