'Twenty years ago we did no trade with China and Australia was a pretty good place': Senator says we can stand up to 'bullying' Beijing and find other trade partners

Australia should diversify its trading partners and stop relying on China amid growing tensions with the communist superpower, Queensland Senator Matt Canavan says. Appearing on the Today Show on Wednesday morning, he said Australia did not need trading partners who were 'bullies'. 'Twenty years ago we basically did no trade with China. I can remember what it was like in Australia 20 years ago, it was a pretty good place,' he said. 'We are still going to be a pretty good place as long as we keep our values and principles dear and cherished.' Senator Canavan's comments weren't entirely accurate.  In 2000, Japan was still Australia's No. 1 trading partner with China in seventh position behind the United States, South Korea, Singapore, New Zealand and the UK. China has slapped enormous tariffs on Australian goods, including beef, barley and wine (pictured, a shopper in Beijing on November 23) Back then, Australia's trade with China was worth $6.9b

People must be reminded swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitisers can kill, expert warns amid spike in poisonings during the Covid pandemic

People must be reminded that swallowing alcohol-based hand sanitisers could kill, an expert has warned.  Squirting the gels onto hands is now an almost daily activity for millions, and they have become a common sight in schools, supermarkets and offices. But now an Oxford University researcher has raised the alarm and urged parents to keep them out of reach of children, and those suffering from dementia and mental health issues. There has been an almost three-fold spike in poisonings from alcohol-based hand sanitisers this year in the UK, according to the National Poisons Information Service.  There were 155 between January and September 2019, but this has surged to 398 over this year largely because of the Covid pandemic. Georgia Richards, who is doing a PhD in epidemiology at Oxford's Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine, pointed to two preventable deaths in people who swallowed hand sanitiser. She published details of the cases - which occurred in England before the pandemic - in

A $1.75 billion failure: Quibi officially closes down and locks users out just eight months after launching a subscription streaming service focused on short-form clips for consumers 'on the go'

Quibi has officially closed down just eight months after the app launched with the promise of revolutionizing the subscription streaming video market.  The brainchild of Hollywood powerhouse Jeffrey Katzenberg stopped being operable as of Tuesday, with any loyal users the app once had now unable to log in or access its 'on the go' content.   Katzenberg told staff back in October the entertainment startup that had raised $1.75 billion in capital would shutter after it failed to make waves following its April debut.  While executives have blamed its flop on the coronavirus pandemic, the firm has been plagued with issues since the get-go, with reports surfacing in June of a feud between Katzenberg and CEO Meg Whitman as far back as 2018.  Quibi has officially closed down just eight months after the app launched with the promise of revolutionizing the subscription streaming video market Quibi's website is still up and running and the app will remain on consumers' smartphone
