Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson faces calls to stand aside from duties after being arrested with four others in bribery and witness intimidation probe

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson appears to be resisting calls to stand aside from his duties after he was arrested along with four others in connection with bribery and witness intimidation. Mr Anderson was among a group of people detained on Friday by detectives investigating fraud allegations linked to building contracts. He was interviewed for six hours before being released on bail, saying in a statement that he will continue to 'cooperate'.  Labour has suspended Mr Anderson while the investigation continues, and local opponents are demanding he gives up 'all official duties until cleared or convicted'. Former Labour MP for Liverpool Walton Peter Kilfoyle told MailOnline the mayor needs to step aside while 'this whole mess is sorted out'.   However, the 62-year-old - who has not been charged - has yet to give any indication that he will bow to the pressure. Hero's welcome for Royal Navy frigate HMS Lancaster as it arrives back at Portsmouth after shadowing Russian warships circling the British Isles

A Royal Navy ship was given a hero's welcome this morning as it returned to port in Portsmouth after shadowing and gatherings intelligence on Russian warships travelling around the UK.  HMS Lancaster returned to the naval base in Hampshire having completed a tour to the High North where it led a freedom of navigation operation, leading a multi-national task group within the Arctic Circle. As it returned home, the Type 23 frigate became involved in operations monitoring Russian warships in the Baie de Seine in northern France.  In the past two weeks a total of nine Russian warships have been followed by the Royal Navy around the UK as Vladimir Putin increases his military presence in British waters. The judge leading the Princes Diana interview probe has family links to the BBC, it has been revealed.  Judge Lord Dyson's brother David Levy was in charge of public policy and regulation at the BBC until 2007.
