River bursts banks turning fields into LAKES and submerging train lines as three weeks of rain falls in a day in Britain putting 129 areas at risk of flooding

A major river burst its banks today as parts of Britain were hit by major flooding with up to four inches of rain and 60mph winds hitting the country along with lightning and hail. The River Towy bursts its banks in Carmarthenshire as Wales bore the brunt of the severe weather, while flood barriers were installed at Bewdley in Worcestershire amid concerns at the high levels of the River Severn. Flooding was also seen on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border at Welney today, as the Environment Agency issued 68 flood alerts and ten warnings for England, and Natural Resources Wales had 42 alerts and nine warnings out. The Met Office issued an amber 'be prepared' rain warning for South Wales running throughout today, where homes and businesses are likely to be flooded and delays or cancellations to train and bus services are also likely.  Forecasters also warned that 'fast flowing or deep floodwater is likely, causing danger to life' in the region and said there was a 'good

'I worked so hard for it': Jill Biden hits back at critics of her doctorate and condemns the 'tone' of WSJ column that called her 'kiddo' and told her to drop 'Dr' title because it 'feels fraudulent and comic'

Jill Biden has hit out at critics of her doctorate which she 'worked so hard for' and condemned the 'tone' of the Wall Street Journal article which panned her. The 69-year-old told Stephen Colbert she was 'surprised' by the opinion piece in an interview alongside president-elect Joe Biden. Joseph Epstein ignited controversy earlier this week with the op-ed titled 'Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D.' It  criticized the incoming first lady for using ‘Dr.’ as an honorific even though she’s not a physician.   He addressed Jill as ‘kiddo’ and wrote that the use of the honorific felt ‘fraudulent’ and ‘comic’ since the wife of President-elect Joe Biden doesn’t have a medical background. Epstein’s take sparked an angry backlash and accusations of sexism on social media.  Colbert asked: 'You once said in your memoir the role I have always felt most at home in is Dr Biden. Some people have recently taken it upon themselves to questio

Newborn baby may have survived if consultant had not left room during difficult birth at hospital where there have been at least 20 maternity deaths, coroner says

A coroner has said that a newborn baby may have survived if a consultant had not left the room and the child had been born a few minutes earlier. The hospital - which has been linked to 20 maternity deaths or serious harm cases - accepted there were failings in their care and offered their sincere condolences for the 'devastating loss' of the baby. Freddie Barnett's delivery at the hospital in Barnstaple, North Devon, in June 2017 was difficult because of his low heart rate and poor condition. Despite the best efforts of midwives, Freddie died 30 minutes after his birth. Today his mother Charlotte Barnett, 30, gave an inquest a harrowing account of Freddie dying minutes after he was delivered.  Freddie Barnett's delivery at the hospital in Barnstaple, North Devon, in June 2017 was difficult because of his low heart rate and poor condition Coroner Nick Brown said Freddie might have survived if the consultant had not left the room and the baby had been one or two minutes

Boris Johnson's decision to place London in Tier 3 has further decimated trade in the West End with footfall down 25% in a week and 68.5% in a year on one of the busiest shopping days of 2020, MailOnline can reveal today. Christmas shoppers hit the high streets with experts predicting the UK's tills will ring with a staggering £2.5million-a-minute spent on gifts over the next four days - but it appears much more of this spending will have been online. Total spending today – dubbed Frenzied Friday – is predicted to hit £1.55billion, up by 19 per cent on the equivalent day last year, despite the dreaded coronavirus crisis trashing the festive season for millions.  But while many still braved pouring rain to hit the shops in London, Liverpool, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Reading, Windsor and Swansea, the number of people shopping compared to a week ago - and the same day in 2019 - is down massively as a total of 38 million people begin life in Tier Three from Saturday.  Coronavirus loc
