Democrats slam Trump ultra-loyalist Jim Jordan for 'giving oxygen to his conspiracy theories' as he tries to derail vote on ordering Pence use 25th Amendment to remove president

There was an angry clash at the House Rules Committee Tuesday as Democratic members tried to get Republican Jim Jordan to denounce the claim that Joe Biden didn't fairly win the election following a Capitol riot that endangered lawmakers and resulted in the death of a Capitol Police officer. Rules Chairman Rep. Jim McGovern repeatedly put Jordan in the hot seat by asking him to state that Biden won the election 'fair and square.' It was something Jordan was unwilling to do, even as lawmakers in both parties reacted in horror to the riot that occurred steps away from the Capitol hearing room.   'Mr. Jordan, this isn't a both sides issue,' McGovern told Jordan after he expressed opposition to a House Democratic impeachment resolution being considered. 'Of course I understand Joe Biden won,' Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio said, without being willing to say it was done fairly Then he delivered a long recitation of what happened on Wednesday, culminating in a questi

Sweden has registered 17,395 new coronavirus cases since Friday, taking the total above 500,000 cases since the start of the pandemic. The statistics from the Healthy Agency, means that the country now has more coronavirus patients in hospital than at any stage of the pandemic as hospitals struggle to cope with a rampant second wave of the virus. Sweden has made headlines around the world by never imposing the type of lockdown seen elsewhere in Europe but it has started tightening measures in the face of a stronger than expected second wave over recent months. The figures show that December 17 was the deadliest day since the start of the pandemic with 116 deaths, surpassing a previous peak of 115 daily deaths set in April. While Sweden still has around 20 per cent spare capacity at intensive care units, there are worries the spread will accelerate again as people return to work and schools after the holidays. A group of 20 influential public radio stations has condemned the New York Times for a 'lack of transparency' after personal ties between the star host of 'The Daily' Michael Barbaro and its discredited series 'Caliphate' emerged. Barbaro was in December tasked with speaking to the Times' executive editor Dean Baquet in an episode of The Daily - which is also broadcast on public radio - in which the paper retracted much of the story on which popular series Caliphate had been built. The Times acknowledged that it had been misled in the production of the series by Canadian-Pakistani man Shehroze Chaudhry, 25, who had fabricated his story of working as an ISIS executioner. Yet in hosting the episode, Barbaro failed to disclose that much of the production team involved in 'Caliphate' had come from 'The Daily' - and that he is engaged to the series' executive producer Lisa Tobin. According to NPR, Barbaro also pressured at least five journalis
