Last survivor of torpedoed Japanese warship that sunk in WWII killing more than 800 captured British troops has died, aged 101, after testing positive for coronavirus

The last survivor of a torpedoed World War II ship has died aged 101 - on his daughter's birthday - after testing positive for Covid-19. Dennis Morley, from Chalford, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, was a prisoner on the Japanese ship Lisbon Maru when it was attacked by an American submarine in 1942 and more than 800 captured British troops died when it went down. Mr Morley survived and after being rescued from the sea remained a prisoner of war of the Japanese until Christmas Day 1945.  Exactly 75 years later he spent Christmas 2020 in Gloucestershire Royal Hospital being treated for a leg infection and a fall.  He was expecting to go home on December 29 but then tested positive for Covid-19. Mr Morely died on January 3, his daughter Denise Wynn's birthday. He was the last of the passengers and crew from the sinking of the Lisbon Maru. BBC had too many Remainers and not enough Brexiteers on Question Time, corporation's incoming chairman Richard Sharp tells MPs as he admits giving £400,000 to Tories

The BBC often had too many Remainers and not enough Brexiteers on Question Time, the broadcaster's incoming chairman told MPs today.  Richard Sharp, who has been chosen by the Government as its preferred candidate for the post, said the 'breadth of the coverage' on Brexit was largely 'incredibly balanced'. However, he admitted he thought there were times when the BBC's representation of voices in the debate was 'unbalanced'.  Mr Sharp added he thought the Question Time programme had sometimes featured more Remainers than Brexiteers. The BBC has previously been accused of Brexit bias after it allegedly drafted in more Remain than Leave supporters in certain panels. Donald Trump wants lawyer John Eastman who slammed Mike Pence as 'not deserving to be in office' at MAGA rally before Capitol riots for his impeachment defense team

Donald Trump is looking to bring on John Eastman to his impeachment defense team after the lawyer riled up the crowd at last week's rally ahead of them storming the Capitol – and where he blasted Mike Pence as undeserving to continue in his post as vice president. Two people familiar with the matter revealed Wednesday the plans for Trump to hire Eastman after the House voted on an article of impeachment against the president for 'inciting of insurrection'. Asked whether he would be willing, Eastman said: 'If the President of the United States asked me to consider helping him, I would certainly give it consideration.' He would not, however, definitively confirm nor deny whether he will represent Trump, citing attorney-client privilege. FBI agents seize AR-15s, handguns, swords, military-style knives, thousands of rounds of ammunition and even a stun gun walking stick from the homes and vehicles of Capitol rioters

FBI agents and other law enforcement officers have seized numerous weapons from dozens of rioters who were taken into custody for storming the Capitol building last week.  Some of the weapons include Molotov cocktails, rounds of ammunition, swords, military-style knives, AR-15s, handguns and crossbows.   The Justice Department said it had brought at least 70 cases in connection with the riot at the Capitol, in which five people died as supporters of President Donald Trump scaled walls and ransacked offices. Many of those arrested were captured on video and in photos, with some bragging about their actions.  Acting US Attorney for the District of Columbia Michael Sherwin said on Tuesday that while many people in custody were arrested on less serious charges, such as unlawful entry, some offenders may face steeper charges. Among the possible charges some could face include seditious conspiracy or felony murder in connection with the death of Capitol Police officer, Brian Sicknick.  The F

Tory MP calls for 'cyber-flashing' to be made a criminal offence to stop perverts sending X-rated snaps to strangers using AirDrop function on iPhone

A Conservative MP has called for 'cyber-flashing' to be made a criminal offence to stop Britons sending X-rated snaps to strangers using the AirDrop function on their iPhones.   Cyber-flashing is when a person is sent an unsolicited sexual image on their mobile device by a stranger nearby through AirDrop, a file-sharing function on iPhones.  Victims are often targeted on public transport due to the technology's short range.  There is currently no law which directly addresses 'cyber-flashing' in England and Wales, despite the act being made illegal in Scotland 12 years ago.  However, MP for Brecon and Radnorshire Fay Jones, 35, has now called for 'digital flashing' to be made a criminal offence. Black security guard is FIRED for punching MAGA mom, who was shamed by her BLM protester daughter

A black security guard said she has been fired after she was filmed punching the MAGA mom who was shamed by her teen daughter. Footage from the Washington DC protest on January 5, shows 50-year-old Therese Duke trying to snatch a phone out of the hands of Ashanti Smith, 28, who immediately wheeled around and jabbed the Trump supporter in the face with her fist. Smith is then shoved toward a crowd of cops, before a melee broke out between the two sides and pepper spray was deployed during a demonstration at BLM Plaza in Washington, D.C - the night before a mob stormed the Capitol on January 6. Smith, who had been on break from her job as a security guard, said she was terrified after being surrounded by the baying DC, and responded in self defense when Duke attempted to knock the phone from her hand.  'I honestly feared for my life. The video makes me look like I am the aggressor, but it does not show what happened prior to my defending myself,' Smith said.  Scroll down for vide

Worms are ruled safe to eat by the EU - paving the way for bugs of all shapes and sizes to hit European plates

Mealworms may soon find their way into Europe's pasta bowls and dinner dishes, after becoming the first insect approved in the region as a human food. Wednesday's decision by the European Food Safety Agency paves the way for the yellow grubs to be used whole and dried in curries and other recipes and as a flour to make biscuits, pasta and bread. Despite their name, mealworms are beetle larvae rather than worms and are already used in Europe as a pet food ingredient. Rich in protein, fat and fibre, they are likely to be the first of many insects to feature on European's plates in the coming years, EFSA chemist and food scientist Ermolaos Ververis told Reuters.
