Fired New York Times editor accuses the paper of taking 'a shot at my reputation' by suggesting she was fired for her work, rather than pro-Biden 'I have chills' tweet

Lauren Wolfe lost her gig with the Times last week following a tweet in which she described herself as 'having chills' seeing Joe Biden's plane land before his inauguration A New York Times freelance editor who was sacked last week following a tweet in which she described herself as 'having chills' seeing Joe Biden's plane land before his inauguration has claimed the paper took 'a shot at my reputation'.  Lauren Wolfe lost her gig with the Times, where she had started working last May, after a manager contacted her to say that the publication could not be associated with tweet, she told the Washington Post. According to Wolfe, the tweet was 'the only reason they fired me', as she responded to the paper for claiming otherwise. A statement from the Times had alleged that her dismissal was not on the basis of the tweet alone, but did not comment any further on the reasons for letting her go. 'There's a lot of inaccurate information circulati

Youngest victim, 14, of the Green River Killer - America's most prolific murderer - is identified 40 years after she was found dead near Seattle baseball field, thanks to genetic genealogy

Genetic genealogy helped identify the youngest known victim of one of the nation's most prolific serial murderers known as the Green River Killer almost 37 years after the 14-year-old girl's skeletal remains were discovered near a baseball field south of Seattle. Wendy Stephens, who until now had been known only as 'Bones 10,' had run away from her home in Denver before Gary Ridgway strangled her in 1983, the King County Sheriff's Office announced on Monday. Ridgway terrorized the Seattle area in the 1980s, and since 2003, he has pleaded guilty to killing 49 women and girls. Four of the victims - including Stephens - remained unidentified at the time of his plea. 'Ridgway's murderous spree left a trail of profound grief for so many families of murdered and missing women,' King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg said in a written statement. 'We are thankful that Wendy Stephens´ family will now have answers to their enormous loss suffered nearly 40 years

Ex-Air Force intelligence worker, 47, who planned to hand classified NSA information to Russia and kidnapped her six-year-old daughter is sentenced to 11 years in prison

A West Virginia woman who once served in the Air Force was sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison Monday for planning to hand over top-secret information from the National Security Agency to the Russian government after kidnapping her six-year-old daughter. Elizabeth Jo Shirley, 47, pleaded guilty last year as part of an agreement to one count each of willful retention of national defense information and international parental kidnapping. 'Shirley held a position that required the highest level of trust,' U.S. Attorney Bill Powell of West Virginia's northern district said in a statement. 'When she committed these crimes, she not only broke that trust, she potentially endangered the very people who employed her and her neighbors. National security is one of our highest priorities. Shirley deserves her sentence and not a day less.' Elizabeth Jo Shirley, who previously served in the Air Force, was sentenced Monday to more than 11 years in federal prison for

Teen was strangled, had his hands nearly sawn off and was dumped naked in a bathtub by his Grindr date who has now been charged with hate crimes in addition to attempted murder

A hate crime charge has been added to attempted murder in the case of a gay Louisiana teenager who was strangled, stabbed and battered by another teen he met on the dating app Grindr last year. Police initially said the evidence did not support a hate crime charge in the attack on Holden White, then aged 18, who spent days in a coma and nearly a month in the hospital and still does not have full use of both hands seven months later.  White said the suspect, 19-year-old Chance Seneca, wrapped a cord around his neck so tightly he lost consciousness and that he woke up in a bathtub where the assailant repeatedly slashed his wrists. 'I was saying my final words to myself, which were just, "Stay calm,"' White told KLFY-TV. Louisiana prosecutors have added a hate crime charge to the attempted murder case against Chance Seneca, 19 , seven months after the brutal attack on Holden White White survived being repeatedly stabbed, beaten, slashed and strangled after going out on a

'I can't wait until the day I can kiss your sweet little face again': Sister of woman who shot dead five children and herself pays tribute to her youngest nephew on what would have been his second birthday

‘Wartime juries’ of just SEVEN people should be used to clear courts backlog after Covid, Labour says

Labour has called on the size of juries to be cut from 12 people to seven to help clear the backlog of criminal cases waiting to come to court amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The party called on the Government to resort to 'wartime juries', as were used during the Second World War when numbers were cut except for murder and treason trials, to reduce the space needed to hold socially-distanced trials. This could also help reduce the likelihood of jurors becoming infected with coronavirus while attending court, according to Labour. Victims of rape, murder, domestic abuse, robbery and assault are facing delays of up to four years in getting justice, the party said. It also called for more Nightingale courts to be opened, quicker. 'The justice system is facing its gravest crisis since World War Two, leaving thousands of victims waiting too long to get justice,' Shadow justice secretary David Lammy said.
