Bari Weiss hammers Ted Cruz for criticizing CNN reporter Clarissa Ward in Kabul who said Taliban 'seem friendly' despite fact they were chanting 'Death to America' and telling her to stand aside because she's a woman

Former New York Times Opinion Editor Bari Weiss slammed Senator Ted Cruz on Twitter Monday, after the senator criticized a CNN reporter who said Afghanistan protesters 'seem friendly' despite chanting 'death to America' and telling her to stand aside because she is a woman. 'They're just chanting death to America, but they seem friendly at the same time,' Clarissa Ward said while wearing a burka in a clip posted to Twitter. She interviewed members of the Taliban on the streets of Kabul after the city fell to its fighters.  The video was retweeted by Senator Ted Cruz, who wrote Monday: 'Is there an enemy of America for whom CNN WON’T cheerlead? (In mandatory burkas, no less).' His tweet received more than 16,000 likes, and was retweeted nearly 4,000 times. But soon after, Weiss, a former New York Times journalist retweeted him, calling his tweet an 'appalling statement about a reporter showing real courage. Of a piece with so many glib takes tryin

Sacrificed for surrender: In their own shattering words, those who lost loved ones in Afghanistan ask - what WAS it all for?

Veterans and families of soldiers killed in the Afghan conflict hit out yesterday at the 20 years of ‘senseless’ British sacrifice. They feared the return of the Taliban meant troops had died in vain, as their achievements were effectively wiped out after the West’s withdrawal. The resurgence of the hardline Islamists has left parents, widows and veterans questioning what was achieved by two decades of British boots on the ground, and the loss of 457 servicemen and women. They also spoke of their fears for the millions of innocent Afghan civilians – strangers on the other side of the world who their loved ones had fought and died for.     Daniel John Clack killed in Afghanistan with fiance Amy Tinley. 'How many on board? Holy cow': US Air Force crams 640 evacuees onto C-17 jet out of Kabul - FOUR TIMES its normal capacity

The US Air Force crammed 640 people onto a C-17 jet that flew out of Kabul on Sunday, four times its usual capacity, as part of the ongoing effort to extract thousands of stranded Americans and Afghans from the city which has fallen to the Taliban. The C-17, numbered RCH 871, took off from Hamid Karzai International Airport on Sunday for the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. It is one of at least two that have flown out of Afghanistan since the Taliban claimed Kabul on Sunday.  Another C-17 - numbered RCH 885 - took off on Monday as hundreds of desperate Afghan nationals flooded the airfield in the hopes of being taken with it. Three people clung to the engines and fell to their deaths as the aircraft ascended. Two others died after being shot by US forces, CBS News reported, and two are said to have been crushed beneath the wheels of a departing plane.  New audio from RCH 871 reveals the US Air Force pilot communicating with a controller who asked how many people were on board.  'Ok, ho

Gun owners face new health record checks: Commercial company could vet medical history of firearms applicants after Plymouth massacre

Gun  owners' medical records could be vetted by a commercial company in the wake of the Plymouth massacre. The Home Office is understood to be drawing up plans to allow shooting enthusiasts' records – including mental health concerns – to be released in confidence by their GP. Records would only be disclosed with the agreement of anyone who applies for a firearms or shotgun certificate, it is understood. The proposed scheme is designed to bypass a reluctance by some GPs to produce reports for gun licence applicants. Others decline to take part citing a lack of expertise in mental health, while others charge large fees. A Home Office source said: 'This

China 'locked me up in a secret Dubai jail': Woman, 26, claims she was held for eight days at secret detention centre with at least two Uyghur Muslims

A young Chinese woman has claimed she was held for eight days at a secret detention centre run by her country in Dubai with at least two Uyghur Muslims. It may be the first evidence that China is operating a ‘black site’ – or secret jail where prisoners are not usually charged and have no legal protection – beyond its borders. Wu Huan, 26, was on the run in Dubai trying to avoid extradition to her home country because her fiance is considered a dissident there. Wu’s claims were reported by the Associated Press news agency, which said it had not been able to confirm or disprove them independently  Miss Wu said yesterday she was abducted from a hotel in the emirate and detained by Chinese officials at a villa converted into a jail.  While there, she said she saw or heard two other prisoners, both members of the largely Muslim Uyghur minority which is heavily persecuted in China. She was questioned and threatened in Chinese and forced to sign legal documents incriminating her fiance Wang

EXCLUSIVE: Taliban commander who gave taunting victory speech from Kabul palace was released from Guantanamo Bay after claiming he was a 'simple shopkeeper' who 'helped Americans' and wanted to return to Afghanistan to care for his sick father

A Taliban 'commander' who goaded the US in a victory speech from inside the presidential palace in Kabul was released from Guantanamo Bay after promising authorities he was returning to Afghanistan to care for his sick father, DailyMail.com can reveal. The bearded fanatic was among a group of gun-toting fighters who staged a celebratory press conference Sunday just hours after President Ashraf Ghani fled his country amid chaotic scenes. Experts identified him as Gholam Ruhani, a former Gitmo detainee who was accused by US officials of being a longtime security agent for the Taliban's feared Ministry of Intelligence with close family ties to its senior figures. Ruhani revealed to Al Jazeera on Sunday that he was incarcerated for seven years at the Cuban-based military lockup which was established nearly two decades ago to cage the world's most dangerous terrorists. State Department documents seen by DailyMail.com confirm that Ruhani – detainee number 3 - was one of the v
