In red, yellow, orange, blue and white, this spectacular natural phenomenon is part of a rocky landscape, hundreds of metres high, known as a danxia formation – around 600 miles west of Shanghai in the Gansu province of China. The candy-striped peaks have been formed from different layers of sandstone compressed together over 24 million years. Summit to look at: Amazing colours

Photographer Melinda Chan said: "I felt like Alice in Wonderland. "I was surprised by this breathtaking scenery with all the wonderful colours when I climbed up to the top of the hill. "Some people thought the colours were Photoshopped but they really are that beautiful."
