Sky sneaks out warning that TV package prices could be hiked 10 per cent in September

Millions of Sky TV customers face a price rise of up to ten per cent in September in the latest blow to cash-strapped households.

A warning that prices could possibly rise was sneaked out in small print on its website, where the TV giant said it may push up costs ‘in accordance with our standard terms’. It is possible prices will rise by a lower amount, but Sky would not confirm by how much.

Sky would not confirm whether this will apply just to new customers or if it will include existing ones too, or whether the price rise will impact prices where TV is bundled with internet or homephone.

Sky offers four main TV bundles ranging from £21.50 a month to £42.50 a year. A ten per cent hike would mean its ‘Family Bundle’, which currently costs £31.50 a month, would increase by £3.15 to £34.65 a month.

Its most expensive package, the 'Sports Bundle' would increase from £42.50 a month to £46.75.

Sky last pushed up its costs in December when it hiked line rental for its homephone customers from £12.25 to £14.50 – an increase of 18 per cent. It also increased the costs some of its calls.

It was the second time that Sky increased line rental for new customers and call charges following an earlier rise in September.  

Last week BT said it was hiking the price of its line rental saver plan by 10 per cent – from £129 a year to £141.

BT said its line rental is frozen until 2014, suggesting a rise next year.
