REVEALED: Trump's pardon for Michael Flynn includes immunity from prosecution for any future charges stemming from Mueller investigation

President Donald Trump's pardon for Michael Flynn includes immunity from prosecution for any future charges, the Department of Justice revealed as it moved to dismiss the government's case against the former National Security Adviser.

The text of the pardon states that Flynn has immunity from any future charges stemming from the Mueller investigation into Russian influence on the 2016 election.

It protects him from 'any possible future perjury or contempt charge in connection with General Flynn's sworn statements and any other possible future charge that this Court or the court-appointed amicus has suggested might somehow keep this criminal case alive over the government's objection,' the Justice Department wrote in a filing released on Monday, according to CNN.

A perjury charge might have applied to Flynn's statement that he had committed the crime he was accused of.

He pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his calls with the Russian ambassador, only to later seek to withdraw the plea.

Trump pardoned Flynn on Wednesday.

In February, Attorney General William Barr ordered prosecutors to review their case against Flynn, and a planned sentencing was delayed.

Federal prosecutors in May abruptly moved to drop the case, a move that was seen as a political favor to Flynn, an ally of Trump who cooperated with investigators.

Judge Emmet Sullivan ordered that an outside counsel - former John Gotti prosecutor John Gleeson - would argue why the case against Flynn should go forward. Gleeson argued that Flynn's attempt to change his plea amounted to perjury.

Sullivan had yet to issue a final decision on the matter.

A three-judge panel ordered Judge Sullivan to dismiss the case, but that ruling got overturned on appeal to the full circuit.

Flynn was announced as Trump's NSA in November 2016 as the presidential transition went forward.

Just weeks into Trump's term, it surfaced that Flynn had lied about his December 2016 converations with the Russian ambassador about sanctions against the country, while Barack Obama was still in office.

Flynn is the second Russia probe figure to get relief, after longtime Trump advisor Roger Stone avoided jail time after Trump granted him clemency.

Trump has long championed Flynn and used his prosecution to make the case that the FBI 'spied' on his campaign – although back in 2017 he fired Flynn after just weeks on the job after it was revealed he did not disclose his contacts with Russia's former ambassador to the U.S. to Vice President Mike Pence.

In a tweet almost three years ago – long before the Mueller probe Flynn cooperated with would wrap up and the House would impeach him, Trump wrote: 'I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!'

Flynn was on the job for just 24 days before Trump fired him.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigators would later speak to his utility and cooperation in their investigation of the Russia probe.

The information he lied about concerned his contacts with then Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak.

Flynn would later admit he lied when he denied talking to Kislyak about sanctions imposed by the outgoing Obama administration on Russia for election interference.

Announcing his pardon of Flynn on Wednesday, Trump urged his former NSA to 'have a great life.'

Flynn's family thanked Trump in a statement shared on his Twitter account.

'Let it be heard across this great country and around the world that tyranny will not topple us. Masks will not silence us. Threats will not stop us. Evil will not triumph. We are Americans,' the statement added.

Flynn's attorney, Sidney Powell, also thanked Trump and called the case against Flynn 'one of the most egregious injustices I've witnessed in American history.'

Powell also appeared with Rudy Giuliani in a bizarre press conference alleging voter fraud earlier this month - though later it was revealed that she was not in fact a lawyer for President Trump's reelection effort.
