The MOST Aussie wedding proposal EVER: Man uses a beer stubbie to pop the question to his glamorous girlfriend - but the plan comes unstuck when she refuses to drink

A farmer popped the question to his glamorous girlfriend in the most Australian way possible - hiding a diamond ring inside a glass beer stubbie.

Mitchel Sargood, 30, came up with the intricate plan and enlisted the help of a mate to carefully cut the bottom off the bottle, insert the ring, then glue it back together.

After refilling the stubbie with fresh beer and placing the cap back on, he gave the valuable beverage to his girlfriend, Eliza Keeley, at a party on the family's Charleville property.

But his plan was foiled because Ms Keeley refused to take even a sip of the beer when he gave her the beer.

The 28-year-old said her boyfriend was being extremely social at the party and took the entire afternoon to hand the drink to her - at which point she kept putting it down because she didn't want to drink a warm beer.

Mr Sargood then went to plan B and smashed the bottle himself, placed the ring in a glass of wine and got down on one knee, the pair told The Courier Mail.

Ms Keeley - now Ms Sargood - enthusiastically screamed 'yes' and the couple were married in October this year in an intimate country ceremony with close friend and family.

Their original 240 person guest list had to be trimmed down to just 30 to comply with Queensland's strict coronavirus gathering laws which were in effect on the days of their vows October 10.

One of Ms Sargood's bridesmaids, Alice Dingle, and one of Mr Sargood's groomsmen, Jordan Street, could also not make the ceremony because of the state's border closures.

'Our wedding was always going to be at home. Only we were planning a big wedding with all our friends and family. In the end it was only 30 people so we managed with family members' dining tables and outdoor settings,' Ms Sargood said.

Ms Sargood also said her dress was another special part of the wedding as she only found it at the last minute after her scheduled fitting was over.

'I asked to please try one final one and fell instantly in love. I was told it was the 'Scottie'. Mum and I both had tears in our eyes and knew it was a sign, as Mitch's father Scott passed last year,' she said.

The pair were both living in London in 2014 and met through a mutual friend at a pub and stayed together once returning to Australia.

The couple are hoping to throw a big bash for their extended friends and family where everyone can 'dance and socialise' sometime in 2021.
