White House 'will spend $44,000 on deep cleaning carpets' ahead of Joe Biden's inauguration

The White House will reportedly spend $44,000 on deep cleaning carpets ahead of Joe Biden's inauguration on January 20 next year.

While a deep clean of the presidential residence and workplace is customary when a transition occurs, a more extensive cleaning process is expected in January due to ongoing coronavirus fears.

According to website TMZ, federal financial documents show that more than $44,000 will be spent on 'Inauguration Carpet Cleaning'.

While it is unclear how many rooms in the presidential mansion will have fresh carpeting put down, the White House is 55,000 square feet and boasts 132 rooms, including 16 bedrooms and 35 bathrooms.

The large cleaning cost comes after several Covid-19 outbreaks in the White House during the pandemic, including among members of the First Family.

President Trump himself, along with his wife and Fire Lady Melania Trump and their son Barron were all infected with Covid-19 earlier this year.

Since then, the agency that handles the cleaning of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - The General Services Administration - has been contracted cleaners to regularly disinfect the building.

It is understood that the more thorough clean will take place during the five-hour window between President Trump's departure and Joe Biden's arrival on inauguration day.

Areas not usually accessible to cleaners will be targeted, such as the inside wardrobes and other wardrobes, the website reported.

'During the transition GSA works closely with the Executive Office of the President to ensure that all building areas are prepared for the incoming Administration and completed within the allocated time frame,' a GSA spokesperson told The Telegraph.

'All furniture, flooring, window treatments, handrails, door knobs, light switches, countertops, elevator buttons and restroom fixtures,' the spokesperson added.

Speaking to CNN, a White House official said that the commander in chief's residence will be deep-cleaned and disinfected 'in the same manner as the West Wing and the rest of the White House has been since Covid regulations and guidelines were implemented months ago.'

The GSA has been approached for comment.
