Chicago suspends 17 cops who were caught on video making popcorn and napping in burgled campaign office of Congressman Bobby Rush while rioters tore apart nearby businesses
Chicago Police suspended 17 cops captured on surveillance video lounging inside a burglarized campaign office of a Democrat congressman as people citywide vandalized and stole from businesses.
The cops are first shown entering the campaign office of Congressman Bobby Rush around 1am on June 1.
Several officers are seen making popcorn and napping in the office at differing times amid the widespread civil unrest last year.
Union contract rules allow the cops to appeal their suspensions, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara told the Chicago Sun-Times that the suspensions of 17 officers and supervisors ranged from one day to 20 days.
The union has filed grievances challenging all of the suspensions, he said.

Congressman Rush said the officers involved had 'unmitigated gall' to be taking a break there while Mayor Lori Lightfood slammed the incident as 'a personal embarrasment'
An 18th officer was not suspended but receive a reprimand, according to the Chicago Tribune.
The department did not confirm the suspensions but in a news release said that the Bureau of Internal Affairs has concluded its investigation and that the members of the department involved 'have been notified of the results of the investigation.'
The video was recorded as Chicago police and other departments nationwide were scrambling to quell widespread vandalism, theft and arson in the wake of George Floyd´s death after a white Minneapolis police officer pressed his knee into the Black man´s neck for several minutes.

Bush said at a news conference announcing the bizarre incident that cops had 'a non-caring attitude.'
'They even had the unmitigated gall to go and make coffee for themselves and to pop popcorn, my popcorn, in my microwave while looters were tearing apart businesses within their sight and within their reach,' he said.
'They took such a lackadaisical attitude, a non-caring attitude in my own personal space while looting was occurring all around them. They didn't care.'
Mayor Lori Lightfoot said 'we should all be disgusted' after seeing the alarming footage.
'We should all feel hurt and betrayed in this moment of all moments,' she said.
Police Superintendent David Brown asked incredulously during a press briefing at the time: 'Sleep during a riot? What do you do on a regular shift when there´s no riots?'
Shortly after the video became public, Brown vowed to suspend those involved.
As he did after the video was made public, Catanzara this week said looting at the strip mall where Rush's office was located was over by the time officers arrived.
He said the officers secured the area before they went inside.
'They had already secured the whole property...' he said. 'They came around the front. There was nothing going on. That was done. Period. Are they supposed to stand at attention in the mall?'
