Argentinian taxi driver, 42, is arrested for fatal-hit-and-run that killed woman, 60, after he filed false police report claiming his car had been stolen

An Argentinian taxi driver who lied about having his car stolen after he abandoned it in fatal hit-and-run has been arrested and charged with manslaughter.  

Pablo Darío Martínez was apprehended and booked by the police in Lanús, Buenos Aires, on Monday hours after the incident.

Martínez was approaching the home of Carmen Cacéres, 60, who was on her way to work, and signaled her to cross the street when he suddenly plowed his Chevrolet Corsa into her approximately 4am local time.

Cacéres was rushed to Evita Hospital, where she died Tuesday.

Carmen Cacéres was struck by Pablo Martínez, the driver of a taxi she was awaiting to take her to her job Monday in Lanús, Brazil. Cacéres was left lying in the middle of the street as the motorist fled the scene and was arrested several hours later after he lied about his car being stolen. The 60-year-old woman died Tuesday at a local hospital

A street surveillance camera registered the moment Cacéres' body was became airborne and landed on top of Martínez's vehicle before falling on the rainy street pavement. 

Martínez subsequently sped away without checking on her well-being. 

He appeared at the Lanús 4th police precinct at around 11am Monday and claimed that his car was stolen.

Authorities discovered the vehicle a quarter and a mile away from the scene where Pablo Martínez hit Carmen Cacéres before he escaped. Martínez went to the police about seven hours after the accident to report that his vehicle had been stolen

Authorities found his abandoned the wrecked vehicle a quarter and a mile away outside a soccer stadium.  

Detectives investigating Cacéres' accident checked area surveillance cameras and found several inconsistencies in Martínez's police statement that linked him and his car to the scene of the incident.

According to Argentine newspaper Clarín, authorities have charged Martínez with involuntary manslaughter and filing a false police report.
