Father-of-two psychiatrist, 54, dies two weeks after he was attacked in historic park as two men and a girl, 16, remain in custody charged with attempted murder

A top psychiatrist and father of two has died two weeks after he was attacked in the grounds of Cardiff Castle.

Dr Gary Jenkins, 54, from Cardiff Bay, was left fighting for his life following the early hours attack. 

He tragically died on August 5 at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, 16 days after the attack - leaving behind his devastated family.

Three people - including a 16-year-old girl - have been charged with attempted murder. The charges are expected to be reviewed following his death.

The consultant psychiatrist worked for Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust and was described as a 'loving father of two.'

In a statement, his family said: 'We are distraught to announce the untimely death of Dr Gary Jenkins, who was a loving father of two wonderful daughters.

'He lived his life happily with love, music, creativity and dedication to his profession.'

South Wales Police say it is not currently looking for anyone else in connection with the assault on July 20 at Bute Park in the grounds of Cardiff Castle.

Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Wales said: 'We are aware of the sad passing of Dr Gary Jenkins and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.

'We are liaising with both the Crown Prosecution Service and HM Coroner in respect of his death and this matter will now be progressed as a murder investigation.

'I would like to thank the public for their valuable assistance as we continue to investigate the circumstances of this incident.

'While the three people have been charged, we are still appealing for information. No matter how minor the information might seem, it could be crucial to our investigation.

Detectives are keen to hear from anyone who was in Bute Park during the early hours of July 20, particularly anyone near the Millennium footbridge between midnight and 1.20am.

Two men, Jason Edwards, 25, and Lee William Strickland, 36, both from Cardiff, appeared before Cardiff Magistrates' Court on July 26.

A 16-year-old girl, who cannot be named because of her age, appeared before Cardiff Youth Court on July 28.

All three had been charged with attempting to murder Dr Jenkins, remanded in custody and are due to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on August 23.

Patients, friends and colleagues have also paid tribute Dr Jenkins. One colleague wrote: 'For Gary, a well-loved and much respected colleague who was great fun to work with.

'He was a wonderful, kind and hard-working psychiatrist who will be greatly missed in Cardiff and Vale.'

Another said: 'So sad for all his family and friends. Will miss our chats on the ward. A kind caring man who patients liked so very much.'

One man said: 'This man has done more for my step father in six months than any other Dr has done in the last five years plus.

'What a gentlemen he was, ALWAYS wanted what was best for his patients and wouldn't give up at the first hurdle. Such a sad loss. Thoughts are with your family.'

A fundraising page has also been set up in his memory.
