Woman in her 20s drowns while heroically trying to save a distressed teenager - the third swimming death in the same area in just four hours

A young woman has tragically drowned while frantically trying to rescue another swimmer after a horror afternoon on Victoria's waters. The woman aged in her 20s had rushed to help a  teenage girl struggling in the water at Venus Bay in the Gippsland region around 7.30pm on Wednesday night. She also got into difficulty in the water and had to be dragged to shore  by an off-duty lifeguard, where she died despite desperate efforts to save her. The woman was one of three drownings within four hours across Victoria on Wednesday with another five swimmers hospitalised.  The death toll would have been higher if it wasn't for the desperate efforts of lifeguards who saved a number of swimmers' lives across the state. One of Jonathon Patton's ex-lovers claims he would FaceTime her 'at all hours' while naked as she exposes his 'dirty messages' - as AFL star checks in to hospital for mental health treatment

Another woman has come forward to accuse AFL star Jonathon Patton of sending her inappropriate and explicit messages over a two year period. The woman, who wants to remain anonymous, said she was inspired to call out his alleged behaviour after reading the experiences of four others. The 25-year-old from Sydney said Patton first contacted her via Instagram in April 2018 and was pleasant and polite. She went on two dates with the Hawthorn forward before sleeping with him, but says things quickly soured after that. 'Just because I sleep with someone, doesn't give them the right to FaceTime me at all hours while naked,' she told Daily Mail Australia. Patton strongly denies ever sending unsolicited images and videos, but has been admitted to hospital amid the fallout from the bombshell accusations.  'We can confirm that Jonathon Patton has been admitted to hospital to assist in the management of his ongoing mental health. We hope that Jonathon's privacy be respected at

Apple, BMW, Nike and Huawei named among global brands accused by the Tories of using Uyghur forced labour in China

Global brands such as Apple and BMW are among firms accused of getting supplies from factories using forced labour in a report on China. The Conservative Party Human Rights Commission report said that tens of thousands of Uyghur Muslims had been transported to factories across the country to work. The report noted that one of the 'most shocking new developments' in the last five years was that forced labour was now used 'throughout China in factories which are part of the supply chain of major international corporations'. It also noted that it was 'beyond dispute that UK consumption is driving this (state-sponsored slavery) practice. This can no longer be tolerated'. The report said that the Commission was 'gravely concerned that such modern slavery practices are so endemic in the supply chains of major British and international brands'. It went on: 'Under conditions that strongly suggest forced labour, Uyghurs are working in factories that are in th

Job offers in catering and tourism plummet by up to 75% over the past year - but roles in social care and distribution are soaring during pandemic

The number of jobs on offer in industries such as catering and tourism has shown a huge fall in the past year, as opposed to an increase in sectors including distribution and social care, a new study suggests. Jobs site CV-Library said in general there had been 'resilience' in the employment market during the latest lockdown because of the virus crisis. Job postings in the catering sector are down by 75% compared to a year ago, leisure and tourism fell 68% and retail dropped by 48.6%. The biggest increases were in distribution (up 44%), social care (27%), and medical, pharmaceutical and scientific (26%). China's Covid-19 vaccine is only 50% effective - far lower than the 78% originally touted - results from Brazil show

China's Covid vaccine is only 50.4 per cent effective, Brazilian researchers have found, just days after they announced results of 78 per cent from their late-stage trials. The Brazilian Butantan biomedical centre announced last week the Sinovac Biotech jab had proved 78.4 per cent effective against 'mild to severe' cases which required treatment. But it has now been revealed their results did not include 'very mild' infections from those who had received the vaccine but did not need medical assistance. With this data included, the success rate has now dropped to 50.4 per cent, barely sufficient for the 50 per cent minimum for regulatory approval. It is also well below the 70 per cent recommended by the Chinese government and the World Health Organisation. The news is a major disappointment for Brazil, as the Chinese vaccine is one of two that the federal government had lined up to administer during their deadly Covid surge. Sinovac's chairman has insisted the v

Nancy Pelosi asks Capitol cops to prevent Republicans walking round metal detectors at door of House chamber after they complained about new security measures

Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday asked Capitol Police officers to prevent Republican lawmakers from walking around the newly-installed metal detectors at the doors to the House floor.  As she walked through the magnetometer on her way to talk about the resolution to impeach President Donald Trump, Pelosi said to the cops: 'Can we move this closer to the door so they can't get through?'  Capitol Police officers later added tables the sides of the device to block Republicans from walking around it. The move came after several House Republicans raged about the newly-installed metal detector they need to pass to get onto the chamber floor with many either walking around it or refusing to be searched by officers when they set it off.  Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked Capitol Police officers to prevent Republican lawmakers from walking around the newly-installed metal detectors Capitol Police officers later added tables the sides of the device to block Republicans from walking around
