SAGE urges No10 to make face masks compulsory outdoors in crowded areas to help stop the spread of super-infectious Kent variant

SAGE has urged the Government to make Brits wear face masks outdoors while the country grapples with the highly-infectious Kent coronavirus variant. In a recommendation made on January 13, experts said advice on face masks 'should be strengthened' to deal with the devastating winter wave of infections. The group called for people to consider wearing them outside in crowded areas including parks, supermarket queues or outdoor markets. They said it is possible the Kent variant can infect people within a short exposure window, which makes mask wearing an even more 'important mitigation strategy'. Care home is locked down after 12 residents die from Covid while 18 more plus 30 staff test positive for the virus

A care home in Scotland has gone into lockdown after 12 of its residents died of Covid-19. It is understood 30 residents at West Park Care Home in Glenrothes tested positive for the virus along with 21 staff members. NHS Fife confirmed of those 12 people died and added management at the home is to be given 'advice' to reduce further transmissions. Visitors have been banned from the 36-bedroom site which has temporarily closed to new admissions. An elderly nursing home resident was so neglected by staff that he was left looking like an inmate in a prisoner of war camp, his daughter told an inquest.
