A prisoner cut off his penis in his cell after being told his wife didn't want to see him in a conjugal visit.

Prison workers saved the unnamed inmate's life after finding him bleeding to death following his shocking act of self-mutilation and rushing him to the jail health centre.

The horrific incident happened on Christmas Eve in module 10 of a prison called Puerto III in Puerto de Santa Maria near Cadiz in south-west Spain.

An association representing prison workers at the town's three jails, called TAMPM Puertos, confirmed: 'An inmate amputated his penis because his wife didn't want to go to prison to see him.'

It was not immediately clear if medics had been able to reattach the sex organ.

Local reports said he suffered psychiatric problems.

In September a prisoner in Spain was rushed to hospital after eating his own ears.

The unnamed 30-year-old is said to have cut off his earlobes with a home-made knife in his cell before swallowing them.

He blacked out after committing his shocking act of cannibalism at a jail near Badajoz, south east Spain, around 10am on September 26 and being overpowered by prison guards.

Well-placed sources told Spanish press they had been unable to find the missing body parts and suspected he had either eaten them or flushed them down the toilet.

The weapon the prisoner used is understood to have been a knife he made by attaching a piece of plastic to a small piece of sharpened metal.

The unnamed inmate was being treated at the time at a psychiatric wing of Badajoz's University Hospital.

Local reports said he had previously tried to self-harm but had never hurt himself so badly in the past.

It was not made clear why he was in jail.

Prison guard unions told local press the chilling episode showed what could happen if people who should be in secure psychiatric units were being held in normal prisons,

One union source told El Periodico de Extremadura at the time: 'In Spain there are only a couple of centres of this sort and they're clearly insufficient.'
