I'm buying body armor says Republican who voted to impeach Donald Trump: Peter Meijer says he will defy 'assassin's veto' and says other GOP members are under armed guard

Rep. Peter Meijer, one of the 10 Republicans who voted to impeach President Donald Trump Wednesday, said he and his GOP colleagues are going great lengths to stay safe. 

'I have colleagues who are now traveling with armed escorts out of fear for their safety. Many of us are altering routines,' he told MSNBC. 'I'm working to get body armor, which is a reimbursable purchase that we can make.' 

He said fear for his safety did not factor into his decision to vote to impeach Trump for inciting an insurrection, saying if he gave into an 'assassin's veto, an insurrectionist's veto, a heckler's veto' he would be letting those who attacked the capitol win. 

Rep. Peter Meijer voted was one of 10 Republicans who voted in favor of President Donald Trump's impeachment - now he's looking to buy body armor 

'If we let that guide decisions than you're cowering to the mob,' he said. 'That's the definition of terrorism, is trying to achive a political end using violence.' 

Still Meijer had a dire prediction of what could come. 

'Our expectation is that someone might try to kill us,' the Michigan Republican said. 

So he said he and the other nine Republicans who defected from the party in the most bipartisan impeachment vote in history were 'trying to keep a low profile.' 

Meijer's vote on impeachment wasn't revealed until Wednesday.  

'With the facts at hand, I believe the article of impeachment to be accurate,' he said in a statement. 'The President betrayed his oath of office by seeking to undermine our constitutional process, and he bears responsibility for inciting the violent acts of insurrection last week.' 

'With a heavy heart, I will vote to impeach President Donald J. Trump,' he said.  

The most prominent member of the 10-person group, the House's No. 3 Republican, Rep. Liz Cheney, at first took the brunt of the criticism. 

On Wednesday before the vote, there were already calls from members like Rep. Jim Jordan, a top Traump ally, to have the caucus vote and remove her from her leadership position.          

Since the vote, Meijer said, 'there's a feeling that there's not control here.' 

'We have to account for every scenario,' he added.
