The steak bakes are high! Greggs makes second bid to 'invade' the home of the Cornish pasty by opening new branch in the county... after first was snubbed by locals and forced to close

Greggs is facing a backlash today after opening a second store in Cornwall one year after its first was forced to close.

Locals reacted with fury after the franchise set up shop in Saltash in September 2018, branding it 'junk' and 'Satan's franchise'.

The chain has now attempted a second foray into the county, by opening up at the A30 Cornwall Services.

The news was shared on social media by Cornwall Services, which wrote: 'A brand new Greggs opens today at the services selling freshly prepared breakfast, sandwiches, drinks, bakes and healthy choice options.'

But the announcement prompted an angry reaction from angry locals, who vowed to continue 'fighting the war'.

Outspoken baker Jamie Kilpatrick, 43, owner of Polnoon Pasties in Saltash, Cornwall, said he was surprised they were trying again after the previous reaction.

He said: 'You would have thought they would have learned their lesson. They may be more successful there, but they may not.

'Cornwall is a funny place, people stick to what they know and the real thing. Factory made stuff doesn't cut it, it's not the same as a real Cornish pasty.

'That's what they're fighting against, people here are used to the real thing.

'Greggs didn't work in Saltash, they're a massive brand but they're up against some stiff competition.

'Pasty makers here have been making them for a long time and we make the real McCoy, that's what Greggs are up against.'

James Hankins wrote on Facebook: 'They have won the battle but not the war.'

Julia Russell added: 'Why would you want this in Cornwall? Traditional pasty shops are so much better.'

Catherine Gill said: '2020 gets worse and worse.'

A spokesperson for the Cornish Pasty Association said it was a commercial decision by Greggs but it didn't affect them because the bakery, 'was not selling Cornish pasties.'

In 2013, Greggs was forced to change the name of its best-selling Cornish pasty under EU laws because the product contains peas and carrots.

Cornish pasties were awarded PGI status in 2011 after a lengthy campaign by the Cornish Pasty Association to see their delicacy's name protected.

Protected Geographical Indication status prevents anything that is made outside the designated region from using the traditional name.

They also prohibit anything that does not follow the traditional recipe of meat (no less than 12.5 per cent) and the selected vegetables (no less than 25 per cent).

Though Greggs planned to buy stock from suppliers in Cornwall, the addition of extra vegetables to the recipe prevent them from using the name.

Greggs opened its first store in Cornwall in September 2018, but it shut less than a year later.

After it closed, a spokesman said: 'We continue to look for new opportunity sites across the South West of England as part of our long-term plans.'
