Elderly couple, aged 82 and 80, who were married for 58 years before they died in Miami condo disaster were found by each other's side still in bed together, their son says

An elderly couple, who had been married 58 years, were found still at each other's side, in bed, in the wreckage of the Miami condo collapse, their son said.

Antonio Lozano, 82, and his wife, Gladys, 80, were discovered in the rubble of the Champlain Towers South Condo in Surfside, Florida, over the weekend.

They are among the 11 confirmed dead in the collapse, while the search continues for the more than 150 missing.

Sergio Lozano said that his parents would often joke about who would die first, as neither wanted to live without the other.

Instead, in the early hours of Thursday, they went together.

'I was told they were in bed together. That's the end of the romantic story,' their son, Sergio Lozano, told CBS Miami.

Sergio said he last saw his parents for dinner at their condo on the ninth-floor of the Champlain Towers South condo on Wednesday evening, just hours before the collapse.

'After dinner, I work early in the mornings and hugged my mom good night, kissed my dad, and that was it — no more,' he said.

Sergio, who lives in the sister apartment complex nearby - where residents fear a second collapse could occur - said he was woken up by a loud noise at around 1.30am on Thursday.

Fearing a tornado he ran and opened the door but was met with something even more distressing.

'I opened the door and I told my wife, 'The building is not there,' he said.

The two had known each other over 60 years and would have celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on July 21.

Sergio said his family were morning the loss of 'two amazing people, two totally amazing people', but there was comfort in knowing that the couple, who had known each other since meeting aged 12 in Cuba, were together at the very end.

On Tuesday, the White House announced that President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden would travel to Surfside to see the rescue efforts which entered their sixth day today.

For now, eleven families have gotten the dreaded news that their loved ones did not survive the collapse and have paid tribute to the deceased.

A New York native, she was pulled from the debris and rushed to Aventura Hospital and Medical Center, but died of her injuries soon after.

Fang's 15-year-old son Jonah Handler survived the tragedy after being trapped under the frame of his bed.

He was dramatically rescued from the rubble with the help of a passing dog walker and as he was pulled from the rubble he begged rescuers 'please don't leave me,' the New York Times report.

Family friend, Lisa Mozloom told the AP that her son would make a full recovery. 'He will be fine. He's a miracle.'

Fang's family released a statement paying tribute to her on Friday afternoon.

'There are no words to describe the tragic loss of our beloved Stacie. The members of the Fang and Handler family would like to express our deepest appreciation for the outpouring of sympathy, compassion and support we have received,' the statement said.

'The many heartfelt words of encouragement and love have served as a much needed source of strength during this devastating time. On behalf of Stacie's son, Jonah, we ask you now to please respect our privacy to grieve and to try to help each other heal.'

Also identified over the weekend was 54-year-old Manuel LaFont, a proud father, a baseball fan and a business consultant who lived on the building's eighth floor.

He had a 10-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter with his ex-wife Adriana LaFont, the Miami Herald reported.

Adriana asked her friends on Facebook to pray the rosary for Manny before his body was found. 'So many memories inside the walls that are no more today, forever engraved experiences in the heart,' she wrote.

LaFont, a Houston native, coached his son's baseball team, the Astros, at North Shore Park, just a mile away from the Champlain. He was a parishioner at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Miami Beach. The parish's school parents gathered Saturday afternoon to pray for LaFont and his neighbors who were still missing.

An alumnus of Sharpstown High School in Houston, LaFont had worked across Latin America and the Caribbean for a manufacturing firm, leading a division focusing on roadway safety that built crash cushions and moveable barriers, the Herald reported.

'I got into this industry specifically because I don't want to sell widgets. I want to help people. I want to do something good in this world,' he said at an industry conference in 2016. 'When I die, I want to say that my life meant something.'

Newlyweds Frank Kleiman and Ana Ortiz were also killed when the building fell, alongside Ortiz's disabled son, 26-year-old Luis Bermudez, of San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Ortiz, 46, had just gotten married to 55-year-old Kleiman after the pair were set up on a blind date by close friend Alex Garcia, according to the Miami Herald.

Kleiman lived with his wife and stepson on the same floor as his brother Jay Kleiman, who was in town for a funeral, and their mother Nancy Kress Levin. The Kleimans and their mother are still missing.

Ortiz was described as a woman who was committed to giving her son the best possible life.

'She´s a rock star. And gorgeous,' Garcia told the Herald. 'And on top of that a super mom.'

Ortiz' body was found alongside that of her disabled son.

Her son Bermudez battled muscular dystrophy for years and used a wheelchair. He lived with his mom on the seventh floor of the Champlain Towers South.

His father, also named Luis Bermudez, write a touching tribute to his son nicknamed 'Luiyo' on Facebook.

'Luiyo, my life, I miss you with every beat of my heart, he wrote in Spanish. 'I know that you are with your mother in heaven resting peacefully without any worries, you are free!

'I miss hugging you, kissing you, listening to you, seeing you, being in your company,' he added. 'Oh my Luiyo, how hard it is to be without you. You gave me everything and you showed me how to be the man I am today, you were my teacher, and everything you taught me I will continue to practice.'

'You taught me how to be a good person, how to believe, to never give up, positive thinking, how to ask for forgiveness, how to be grateful, to help others, not to feel sorry for myself, how to accept what is, smile and give thanks for another day,' the grieving father posted. 'You will be my example forever, I love you.'

Venezuelan natives, Leon and Christina Oliwkowicz also perished in the collapse.

The couple lived on the 8th floor of the condo tower for several years, according to Venezuelan journalist Shirley Varnagy, a close friend of their family.

The couple, who had strong ties to the Lubavitch community in Chicago, had just moved to Surfside.

They had already sent their children to live in the U.S. from Venezuela, and then joined them as the economic and political crisis worsened in their native country, Rabbi Moshe Perlstein, dean of the Yeshivas Ohr Eliyahu-Lubavitch Mesivta, an Orthodox Jewish School in Chicago where one of their daughters, Leah Fouhal, works as an office manager told the Las Vegas Sun.

Authorities recovered the bodies of Marcus Joseph Guara, 52, on Saturday and the body of 50-year-old Michael Davis Altman on Monday.

Altman was born in Costa Rica and lived in the United States for several years and was the father of two sons.

Guara lived in the building with his 41-year-old wife Ana Guara and their 11-year-old daughter Lucia and four-year-old daughter Emma- all of whom have been missing since the building collapse, Newsweek reported.

A former colleague described Marcus as a family man who was devoted to his two young daughters and was a 'joy' to be around.

'Marcus is one of the warmest and kindest people I’ve ever met,' Caitlin Noelle Clarke posted on Facebook. 'He’s just a joy to be around. His girls are his world (wife Ana, daughter Lucia 11, and Emma 4). He would never miss an opportunity to share a picture or sweet story about his family; Including always recommending Disney musicals loved by his tribe for my little girl.'

'He’s the best,' she added. 'I still can’t believe this is real. Please lift up this family in a prayer of safety and for the search teams on site working day and night.'

An old friend of Guara reminisced about the old days when Guara was a BMX bike rider in the South Florida Boystown tracks in the late 70s.

Barry Rackard recalls riding with Guara until a serious injury took him out.

'Marcus and his mom were longtime fixtures at Boystown and all the S. Fla tracks. We started racing at about the same time in 1979 and we soon became good friends- we nearly always stayed under the same tent in the pits and would swap parts or give each other tech tips as needed,' Rackard posted on Facebook.

'After about a year of racing, Marcus suffered a severe injury to his spine and spent the next year in rehab/recovery,' he remembered. 'His love of BMX was too strong though and he eventually started racing again. Through hard work and determination his results improved and he became an even better racer than before his accident.'

Rackard said even after his BMX career ended, Guara's love for BMX continued and he became an avid collector of old school BMX.
