Victoria records one new Covid case as 11 million Australians across four states wake up to another day of lockdowns

Victoria has recorded one new local case of coronavirus as the state barricades its border with NSW and anxiously waits to hear if more restrictions will be put in place.

Health officials said on Wednesday morning that the infected person is the primary contact of another case.

They have been in isolation throughout the infectious period. 

The Victorian government classified Greater Sydney and Darwin as 'red' zones on Tuesday amid outbreaks of the highly-contagious Delta variant in each city.

Sydney recorded 19 new cases, bringing the total number of infections up to 149, and Darwin had two new positive test results - bringing the total to 10. 

People in red zones are barred from entering Victoria without an exemption, and residents can return if they get a permit and self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

The rest of NSW and ACT are 'orange zones', which means anyone entering Victoria has to get a permit and isolate until a negative test is received.

State authorities also declared 11 local government areas in Queensland, including the Gold Coast, as red zones as of 1am on Wednesday, along with the Perth and Peel regions in Western Australia. 

About 12 million Australians across four states and territories were locked down this week, including residents of NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory.

Victorian families holidaying interstate are now faced with the prospect of having to cancel their long-awaited getaways.

Victoria's total number of cases is now at 34, and there were 29,949 tests done on Tuesday.
