AFC elects Sheikh Salman president, EXCO member

KUALA LUMPUR: The Asian Football Confederation handed the reins of power to Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa on Thursday, electing the Bahraini as its new president and voting him on to FIFA's all-powerful executive committee. Sheikh Salman secured 33 of the 46 presidential votes available from AFC member associations in Malaysia, to beat Yousuf Al Serkal of the United Arab Emirates (six votes) and Thailand's Worawi Makudi (seven votes) in a lop-sided election. The Bahraini replaces disgraced Qatari Mohamed Bin Hammam, who was banned for life by FIFA in 2011 amid allegations of trying to buy votes. The AFC had been in limbo ever since, with China's Zhang Jilong's interim leadership beset by numerous match-fixing and graft scandals among member associations. Dressed in a sharp grey suit and black tie, Sheik Salman told the AFC Congress that the confederation had to reform and become more transparent. "Today I'm proud and happy, proud and happy to see th

We can sneak into IPL playoffs through back door: Morkel

NEW DELHI: Far-fetched it may sound but two successive wins in the ongoing IPL, following a string of defeats, have opened up a window of opportunity for Delhi Daredevils to "sneak into the playoffs through the back door", feels pace spearhead Morne Morkel. "Now we are playing winning cricket and entertaining cricket. You never know what can happen with that -- we can even sneak into the playoffs through the back door," Morkel said. He, though, was candid in his admission that the team was not performing in the first half of the tournament."Throughout the tournament, the atmosphere in the dressing room has been positive. We know we didn't do well in a few areas and we are trying to do better in those."A shift in venue, from the Feroz Shah Kotla in the capital to the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur, was followed by a dramatic shift in fortunes for the Daredevils."It is nice to have a bit of momentum. And if we try and do

Lucky that I had the talent to play for India: Dravid

KOLKATA: Former skipper Rahul Dravid was modesty personified as he said that he was lucky to have possessed enough talent to play cricket for India and "couldn't have asked for more". "I am very lucky that I had the talent to play cricket for this country. It is the number one sport in this country, virtually a religion in this country and I feel privileged to have played for my country," Dravid said on the sidelines of a felicitation ceremony in recognition of his Padma Bhushan award."I couldn't have asked for anything more and on top of that to get the recognition and honour is truly a big privilege," Dravid said.About getting the third highest civilian award, Dravid said: "It is a great honour. When you start playing you don't think about the awards. You just play because you just love it and there is no reason why you start playing this game."But along the way when you get awards and recognitions from the government of India, fr

It's all about bonding for Suresh Raina

CHENNAI: Suresh Raina is the league's most successful batsman but the only thing that had eluded him over six years was a century. On Thursday at Chepauk, the wait finally ended as he scored a match-winning, unbeaten 100 against Kings XI Punjab. "It's a very good feeling. I missed out on a hundred in South Africa. And when the team needs and you deliver, that's the best feeling, so I am really happy," he said after the match. Such was his confidence that he actually seemed to celebrate on 99 because he knew with two balls to go he would not miss out this time. Raina paced his innings to perfection on Thursday. He was cautious but positive and once he reached his fifty, he was unstoppable. Speaking about his innings, he didn't forget to mention the people who he feels have helped make him such a successful batsman in the format."I had to be a bit cautious against the new ball. I have been spending a lot of time with Duncan (Fletcher) and (Stephen) Flemin

European champions Chelsea storm into Europa League final

LONDON: Chelsea crushed FC Basel 3-1 on Thursday for a 5-2 aggregate semi-final victory to secure their place in the Europa League final against Portugal's Benfica later this month in Amsterdam. The reigning European champions, 2-1 ahead from the first leg in Switzerland last week, lost that advantage when Mohamed Salah scored for the Swiss champions with the last kick of the first half, curling his shot past Chelsea keeper Petr Cech. But interim coach Rafa Benitez's men came storming back with three goals in nine minutes early in the second half. Fernando Torres, Victor Moses and David Luiz all scored - the curly-haired Brazilian with a stunning 25-metre curling shot that effectively ended Basel's resistance after 59 minutes.Frank Lampard, needing one goal to equal Bobby Tambling's all-time Chelsea scoring record of 202, almost got it but hit the post with a fine strike in the ninth minute while Fabian Frei of Basel smashed the ball against the bar in the 63rd minute.

Mala Sinha questions Pamela Chopra's contribution to cinema

She told TOI, "The invitation card that was sent to me didn't even have my name on it. I can understand Asha Bhosle's name on it, but what was Pamela Chopra's contribution to cinema? I don't even care about that, but I have definitely made a major contribution to cinema and need to get my due respect."Sinha, who had even attended the press conference of the award, said, "I was thrilled to be there, but I was not aware that they would be insulting me in such a way. I am really hurt with this behaviour and that is the reason I didn't go to the function. They cheated me. Not only was my name missing from the card, but the seats given to me and my husband was in the eighth row of the auditorium."However, chairman of Phalke Academy Award, Santosh Singh Jain said, "She wanted her name on the card. There are 50 awardees and we couldn't possibly print everybody's name. Besides, Pamela Chopra was given the Saraswatibai Phalke award, which ha

Pakistan to choose local films over Shahrukh's 'Chennai Express'

The Pakistfilm industry has finally braced itself for the release of four Pakistani films after a two-year hiatus. And for this reason, distributors and exhibitors in Pakistan have decided to abandon Shahrukh Khan starrer 'Chennai Express' and Akshay Kumar starrer 'Once Upon a Time in Mumbai 2' - the two films films which are slated to release worldwide around Eid. The reason cited by the exhibitors is that Pakistani film-makers want all four local films - 'Waar', 'Main Hoon Shahid Afridi', 'Ishq Khuda' and 'Josh' - to get more visibility, reports The Express Tribune. According to the report, by applying a protectionist cultural policy, the Pakistani market is being deprived of healthy competition. Producers understandably feel that none of the Pakistani films can compete with the production of value of films like Chennai Express, the report added. The report further said that if the release of Bollywood films carries on as per sched

Indian cinema should rival Hollywood as its eastern equivalent: Saif Ali Khan

Sonam has a higher IQ, but my EQ is higher: Anil Kapoor

Let's talk about your childhood? I was born in Tilak Nagar, Chembur, where we lived in a concrete one-room chawl. In a single room we were three brothers, one sister, my parents and sometimes even my grandparents. We had two lavatories that were shared between 10 families. We lived there till I was 10. My father was an assistant to K Asif, the director of Mughal-e-Azam, after which he became secretary to Shammi Kapoor. In those days, your secretary was treated like family. So we were close to Shammi uncle's family and through him, Raj Kapoor's family. Shammi uncle used to stay at Deonar next to Raj Kapoor's house in Chembur. We had then shifted to Sion Koliwada from a single room to a double room till I was 14, when we shifted back to Chembur close to RK Studio, so that my mother and Krishna aunty could stay close to each other as they were inseparable sisters. They are still best of friends and we were like Krishna aunty's children. She is the only one who has sl

Movies today are made for a certain class: Javed Akhtar

Veteran scriptwriter and poet Javed Akhtar feels movies today are made for a certain class of audience and filmmakers only target metro cities for their project's release."Now films are being made for a certain class. A producer once said to me 'I don't care if my film is not released in UP, MP or Bihar. It must release in metros'. He's saying that 75 percent of Indians don't matter. This is our development. This reflects even for our news channels. How can they go against those who give them advertisements?," said 68-year-old Akhtar while attending an event. Akhtar, who has written hits like 'Sholay', 'Zanjeer', 'Don' and 'Deewar', also said that we have entered "industrial age with an age old feudal mind". "We have entered industrial age with an age old feudal mind. You should see what kind of contracts the entertainment channels get in with musicians, directors or a writer. And these contracts have b

Do charity for any reason, but do it anyways: Salman Khan

o charity and do it directly, suggests actor Salman Khan, who contributes to various social activities through his charitable organisation Being Human. His new campaign aims at curing 500 children suffering from heart ailments."Everybody does charity, but not everybody likes to talk about it. Some may do it for personal benefits, to stay in the limelight or others might do it genuinely. According to me, you may do charity for any reason, but do it anyways. No matter what the intention is," Salman told reporters. When it comes to donation, the "Dabangg" star feels it's even better to do it first hand."Rather than going and giving money to a place where you don't know how it will be utilised, it is better to make direct charity like funding a child's education. At least you can see the results yourself," he said.

Ajay Devgn-Prabhudheva to team up this July

In the Bollywood dream factory, there are a hundred proposals discussed each day and only a handful of truly exciting announcements coming in. However, even if you are the cynical "oh-God-what's-new-about-this-one'' type, you can still feel a certain energy when you hear that two commercially sound talents will come together this monsoon. Bollywood superstar Ajay Devgn will team up with South import Prabhudheva for a project produced by Baba Films, the guys who made fun cinema like Ishq (1997) with Aamir Khan, Ajay, Kajol and Juhi Chawla and Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha (1998) with the husband-wife duo, Ajay-Kajol. The fine print on the Ajay-Prabhu project still remains hazy. But one knows that the film will go on floors in July 2013, perhaps a new girl or a pretty Bollywood siren will come on board and the script is not a remake of any South film as was earlier suggested by trade gup. To just say that Prabhu is gung ho about this project is stating the obvious. The curly-hai

Deepika unhappy about not being able to join Ranbir

If there was one thing Deepika Padukone was truly looking forward to through her hectic shooting schedule in the last month; it was the promotion tour for Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) to the UK and UAE. She has bent backwards to please her directors Rohit Shetty and Sanjay Leela Bhansali with practically working round the clock because she wanted a week off. Those seven days were reserved for the foreign promotions of YJHD with Ranbir Kapoor. But the weather played truant in Munnar where she was shooting for Chennai Express and she got delayed. Not to forget the delay has cost her dearly. She has to now allot dates to Ram Leela and forgo her foreign trip with RK Junior. One hears that Katrina Kaif, who has a few days off, is reportedly flying to London around the same time as Ranbir. It's likely that this piece of information could put Deepu in a blue funk again.

Here's why you must have sex everyday

Some say it's the first medicine ever known to man and it should be administered daily. Sounds too good to be true? Let's discover the four reasons for which a man should have sex each day. Great form of exercise Making love is a form of physical activity. During intercourse, the physiological changes in your body are consistent with a workout. You must have noticed that the respiratory rate rises, which means you get tired. Hence, you burn calories. If you have sex three times a week for 15 minutes (but we know you can do better than that) you'll burn about 7.500 calories in a year. That's the equivalent of jogging 75 miles! Heavy breathing raises the amount of oxygen in your cells, and the testosterone produced during sex keeps your bones and muscles strong. Pain relief The "Honey, not today, I have a headache" cannot be an excuse any more. During sex, both male and female bodies produce endorphins, hormones that act as weak painkillers. A study condu

9 Things men hesitate to tell women

Here are 9 such things (in random order) that men are all the time dying to say, but can't seem to get it out of their system. 1. How many digits in your salary: "What's your salary package," a question that every guy dreads and wishes to evade more than a question like "Are you gay?" They will inform you about a salary increment or a promotion at work but will never divulge the statistical details even if it is good. Dipti Sahu, a media professional, says, "Guys are competitive even with their partners and are wary to disclose details they feel will make us judge them. That's why they can never give definite answers and are always vague about their salary structure." 2. Why can't I earn more than you: We might have progressed into an era where we witness men and women succeeding in the professional sphere but regressive notions continue to exist. Dilasha Seth, a Business journalist, believes that somewhere the traditional notion of a ma

A mother ‘reborn’ through her ‘unborn’ child

Kaberi, a woman belonging to the hills, valleys and tea gardens of Assam, moves into the concrete and mortar space in Richmond Road of Bangalore city after her marriage to Ranjit (Ron). She assimilates (or tries to) into a corporate culture her husband is part of. From picking the right wooden furniture, furnishing the bathroom with branded towels to arranging the living area in the most sophisticated combination of colours, fabrics and flowers on every tabletop, Kaberi finds her days spent under the amlokhi trees, admiring the mighty Brahmaputra River, the smell of the paddy fields and the morning sun atop the Kamakhya temple turning lifeless shadows. Darkness thickens in the form of another bitter truth in the face of Kaberi when her husband walks out on the marriage for another woman. Speaking to her unborn child she laments, "You certainly took your time to show up...your father had given up and was drifting away from me..." It is quite amazing to discern how little resp

3 Dum Pukht nawabi recipes

The effervescent flavours and aroma of dum pukth food can leave even the most stiff-nosed, drooling. If elaborate affairs are your thing, dine like royalty with this traditional nawabi fare. Known as the food of the nawabs, dum pukth or cooking with steam, has been a favourite of the royals since it made its way into India from the Middle East with the Mughals. While it made home in Awadh, it spread to the courts of Hyderabad, Kashmir and central India, with each region giving it a twist. Using less spices than traditional Indian food, it's generous with ghee and is known for its typical purdah (veil) style of cooking. Meat, rice or vegetables are covered in a copper or earthen pot with a flavoured dough of flour, ghee and sugar (a sort of puff pastry). It's then sealed and cooked on a very slow flame. The essence of dum pukth lies in its aroma. Senior master chef Mohammed Shareef, from the now-revamped Dum Pukht ITC Maratha, dishes out a few home-style favourites, which c

South Africa is more than wildlife

Point is, if you've had your share of animal sanctuary outings in India, spotting some more value-additions such as zebras or giraffes shouldn't be the 'only' agenda of your Africa trip. Yes, the 'big five' — lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo — appear intriguing if gaped at from a jeep (though the spotted cat almost never lets you see itself) but there is much more that we first-world-loving Indian travellers can explore in more civilised parts of southern Africa. Did you, for instance, know... That there is a European hangover here Having been colonised by the Dutch and British in the past, South Africa today bears a quiet hangover of it. Nearly half its cities have Dutch names (Johannesburg, Bloemfontein et al) while Cape Town, which has hitherto served as the interim port for European ships to Asia, flaunts distinctive Amsterdam-esque architecture. Thanks to the rainbow nation's fine weather and a historic location on the 'wine route', i

Stay cool this summer

Hotmail officially dead: Outlook.com now has over 400M accounts, 125M on mobile

Hotmail officially dead announced by the Microsoft. Microsoft’s decision to get rid of Hotmail and replace it with Outlook.com appears to have paid off. With all Hotmail users now migrated to Outlook.com, Microsoft says it now has more than 400 million active accounts on the well-designed email service. Outlook.com launched to positive reviews back in July 2012. A few months ago, Outlook.com exited preview with 60 million registered users. But the brunt of the work wasn’t done at that point because it still needed to move its many Hotmail users over to Outlook.com. Microsoft said it migrated 150 petabytes of email in six weeks. The company writes in a blog post: When Outlook.com came out of preview in February, it already had more than 60 million active accounts. However, Hotmail was still one of the most widely used services, with over 300 million active accounts. This made the magnitude of the process incredible, maybe even unprecedented. This meant communicating with hundreds of mil

Hotmail officially dead: Microsoft Completes Outlook.com Upgrade, Users Migration

Hotmail officially dead as Microsoft announced it has completed the outlook.com update and migrated over 300M Hotmail users to outlook.com. All Hotmail accounts have been upgraded to Outlook.com, Microsoft announced in a Thursday blog post. Those with existing @Hotmail.com email addresses can keep them; "you will always be able to use your Hotmail address. No need to ever change," Microsoft said. But navigating to Hotmail.com now redirects users to Outlook.com. Outlook.com launched in preview last summer, and it gained 25 million active users in just under four months. PCMag named Outlook.com as the top Web app in our Best Products of 2012 list, describing it as "the best thing to happen to email in years." It emerged from preview in February with 60 million users. PCMag reports As a result, Microsoft has been moving users of its Hotmail service over to Outlook automatically. But in February, there were 300 million active Hotmail accounts; "

Hotmail officially dead: Outlook Finally Assimilates Hotmail

Hotmail officially dead as most Hotmail users may have been in for a surprise over the last few weeks to find their inboxes updated to Microsoft’s Outlook.com layout. Outlook came out of its preview in February of this year, and since then Microsoft has been rolling Hotmail users into the new design. They managed to migrate 150 petabytes of email in about six weeks. That’s pretty impressive. There’s nothing users need to do on their end to go along with the update. Those with Hotmail addresses can keep them, and it appears that new users can even sign up for a Hotmail address through the new Outlook.com. To try the new Outlook, I registered a few minutes ago and was given the option of an @hotmail.com address. The design changes themselves don’t look particularly drastic, so the bigger change here might be funcionality. The constant stream of Outlook.com ads I’ve been seeing on Hulu lately do make the service look pretty slick, so if prettier email is what you’re looking for, it might

Hotmail Officially Dead: Microsoft migrated 300M Hotmail users to Outlook.com

Hotmail Is Officially Dead ever-since Microsoft also more tightly integrated Outlook with its SkyDrive cloud storage and Moving 300 million users from one popular (and often free) email system to another is bound to ruffle feathers. And feathers were ruffled.  It has been a bit of a rocky road, but Microsoft now says it has successfully migrated a whopping 300 million active Hotmail users to its newer Outlook.com email service and now claims 400 million users of that service. According to a blog post announcing the milestone on Thursday: “Today, we’re excited to announce that we’ve completed upgrading all Hotmail customers to Outlook.com. Coupled with the growing organic excitement for Outlook.com, this has pushed us to over 400 million active Outlook.com accounts, including 125 million that are accessing email, calendar and contacts on a mobile device using Exchange ActiveSync.” And, the transition required the migration of 150 petabytes of data over in six weeks, no small feat. As of today, every single Hotmail account has been migrated to Outlook.com, Microsoft's newer and redesigned email experience. Your Hotmail account will stay the same – people can continue emailing you at [your address]@hotmail.com – but the interface and experience no longer have a thing to do with the Hotmail name. “Our belief is that as people start using the new experience, they will come to love it even more than they loved Hotmail. We are keenly listening to what our customers have to say, and we'll make the right set of adjustments to ensure that we make the experience as great as it can be,” Microsoft noted. Softpedia reportts Outlook.com announced two new features today that Hotmail users can take advantage of right away. 'Storage Wars' drops 3 main cast from episodes: Backfire for the show?

'Storage Wars' drops 3 main cast from episodes, could this backfire the show? It has cut-back the on the screen time for three of its main players of their cast in the wake of the Dave Hester lawsuit against the A&E network and the production company for the show. This started with Hester being “frozen out” of the show, which prompted him to file a lawsuit and also made accusations that the show planted items in the storage units and much of the great finds were fakes, according to Radaronline on May 1, 2013. It is Darrell Sheets and Dan and Laura Dotson that you'll be seeing less of next season. This is the same thing the show did to Hester, which started the ball rolling for his lawsuit. Sheets will be “frozen out” of about six extra episodes of “Storage Wars.” The husband and wife team of auctioneers will also be cut back in the season that just wrapped up shooting. The reason for the cutback in facetime on air for Sheets and the Dotson's is money, according to

TV host sex addiction: David ‘I will fight vigorously’

Naming a TV host’s sex addiction as the cause for a legal separation after a 10-year-domestic partnership is remarkable; especially since the couple is expecting the birth of twins via a surrogate in July. David Tutera, the TV host of "My Fair Wedding," is the breadwinner with an income of “more than $1 million a year.” However, because of the TV host’s alleged sex addiction, Ryan Jurica, David Tutera's partner of 10 years, is demanding full custody of the unborn children, reported People on May 2, 2013. "After repeated attempts at marriage counseling and therapy, we have been unable to save our relationship due to [Tutera's] addiction to sex." In September of 2003, TV host David Tutera and Ryan Jurica wed in Vermont. In 2013, on New Year’s Day, the couple separated. On April 19, 2013, David Tutera filed legal papers at the Los Angeles County Superior Court stating “irreconcilable differences” as the cause for the separation. The legal documents also menti

Tim Tebow Dolphins rumors aren't true

Rumors that the Miami Dolphins may be considering a role for Tim Tebow are not true, says a May 2 report from the Chicago Tribune. Since his release from the New York Jets roster, Tebow has been the talk of the town. Some rumors had him joining the Canadian Football League. The most recent set of Internet chatter has suggested that the Miami Dolphins were looking to pick up Tebow, who's been cleared on waivers. That's not the case, say sources from within the Dolphins organization. The Dolphins report that Tebow has not practiced with the team, nor has he had a team physical. While the team won't rule out that they'd ever talk with Tebow, they say there is currently no activity going on in that regard. While Tebow has continued NFL hopes and dreams, they apparently will not be fulfilled with the Miami Dolphins at this point in time.

Houston airport shooting: Man shot and killed at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport

A man was shot and killed Thursday in a pre-screening area at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, authorities said. Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith told reporters that the man had just come through the doors in Terminal B when he fired at least one shot into the ceiling. A Homeland Security Investigations agent was working in an office near the scene, came out and told the man to drop his weapon. The agent fired once at the suspect, who appeared to try to shoot himself at the same time. An autopsy will determine whose bullet killed the man, who has not been identified, police said. CNN affiliate KHOU reported the man walked into the terminal with a military-style, semiautomatic rifle and fired two shots into the ceiling. The station interviewed a woman who works at a McDonald's in the terminal. "As soon as he walked in, he just automatically started shooting quickly," said the employee, who said her name is Kendra. "And we hear two shots and we

Southern California wildfire threatens college campus

A rapidly spreading wildfire, whipped by gusty winds and extremely dry conditions, forced evacuation of neighborhoods and a state university and closed a stretch of the coast highway northwest of Los Angeles on Thursday. The fire broke out shortly after 7 a.m. PT and by early afternoon had consumed more than 6,500 acres, according to state and Ventura County fire officials. The Ventura County Fire Department said it had sent 20 fire engines to the campus to protect buildings. Tom Kruschke, Ventura County fire spokesman, said flames were approaching apartments on the eastern edge of the university campus. Usa reports He said that when firefighters first responded, the blaze was confined to one acre of brush by a major highway, U.S. 101, near Thousand Oaks, but that it quickly exp
