Heart-stopping moment Toyota SUV driver loses control at a roundabout after a very risky merge – but who was really in the wrong?

Dramatic dash cam footage has captured the terrifying moment an SUV driver's dangerous merge at a roundabout almost ended in disaster.

Opinion is divided over who caused the terrifying moment on a Queensland road shortly after sunset on November 27.

The footage begins with the dash cam motorist driving with a clear road ahead.

A black SUV with Victorian number plates suddenly emerges from the left lane, fails to give way and comes dangerously close to the dash cam motorist as they merge into the lane.

Seconds after merging, the SUV suddenly loses control and ends up driving onto the roundabout in a cloud of dust before veering back on the road.

The SUV then comes to an abrupt halt as the dash cam driver continues their journey.

The footage was uploaded to the Dash Cam Car Owners Facebook page and has since gone viral with thousands of views and comments.

One man commented: 'If you can't merge and leave a decent gap from the car at the back you have cut them off. You can see the merge, back off and drop back in.

'Black car deserved that. I can picture the driver.... stop trying to get one car ahead.'

But opinion was divided over which motorist was in the wrong, with some suggesting the dash cam driver should have backed off and allowed the SUV to merge.

'I'd say the DC driver is just as bad here, using aggressive driving attempting to not let other car change lanes, then impatiently going around after incident whilst other car still not in full control,' one said.

Others believed both drivers were as bad as each other.

'Both drivers were dangerous here. Obviously the one overtaking did the wrong thing but the dash cam driver should have slowed down to avoid a dangerous situation. Could have ended very badly,' one wrote.

Another added: 'Other guy in the wrong but dash cam owner trying to be a smart ass by speeding up, could have just let him in.'

Some eagle-eyed viewers noticed the lack of signage at the roundabout while one local commented that the stretch of road had changed to one lane only recently.

'There would, or at least, should have been signs of the lane closed up ahead. Car on the left perhaps should have pulled back and merged behind DC driver,' one man commented.

According to Queensland road rules, if a driver's lane is ending on the left, they must give way to the right when they merge, meaning the black SUV is officially in the wrong.
