MewTube! 'Miracle' kitten is saved after falling down a six-foot pipe on industrial site - as rescuers rename her Piper

A 'miracle' kitten that was thought to be dead was saved after falling down a six-foot pipe on an industrial site - as her rescuers fittingly renamed her Piper.

Piper, a six-week-old kitten, was discovered trapped with another kitten down a pipe at Moorfield Industrial Estate in Newcastle Road, in Stafford, West Midlands.

A passer-by was able to retrieve the first kitten, but it was assumed Piper was already dead as she was making no sound and lay lifeless at the bottom of the pipe.

However, when the RSPCA arrived and retrieved the tri-coloured kitten from the hole, they heard a tiny meow.

RSPCA inspector Caren Goodman-James said: 'We were sure the kitten was dead as she hadn't moved at all whilst the member of the public reached the other kitten, but then when I used my grasper to bring her out of the pipe, she finally made a sound and moved.

'I couldn't believe the poor thing was still alive as she looked in a really poor state.'

Ms Goodman-James then wrapped Piper in a towel and took her to Shires Veterinary Practice in Stone, where vets still believed she may not survive.

'She was dehydrated and almost lifeless, with agonal breaths and no reflex,' said Ms Goodman-James.

'The vets said her heartbeat was also so weak, they didn't think she would make it.'

The rescuer said she 'shed a tear' at the prospect, only to be told the following day that staff had worked around the clock to save her.

She added: 'This little kitten was literally fighting for her life and after around 90 minutes had started to improve.

'She has continued to make great improvements over the following days.

'She still needs treatment for an eye condition but the vet is very hopeful for a happy and healthy life ahead.'

Piper's brother, a male tabby kitten named Dave, was also rescued from the industrial estate.

Piper is now on the road to recovery and once she is ready, the pair will need a new home together.

The first kitten that was rescued from the pipe has been rehomed by the passer-by who saved him.
