Matthew McConaughey and Russell Brand blast the 'illiberal far left' and Hollywood stars who 'condescend and patronize' Americans who voted for Donald Trump

Matthew McConaughey and Russell Brand have lashed out at liberals who 'condescend and patronize' conservatives.

The actors made the comments during a discussion about politics on Brand's Luminary podcast, Under The Skin, which was released earlier this week.

Brand, 45, began by asking McConaughey, 50, whether he had noticed a 'condemnation and criticism of ordinary working people' by those on the left.

'There a kind of offhandedness, like, "Oh, they're dumb, they're voting for Brexit, they're voting for Trump." I don't like it, and I don't like to hear it,' Brand stated.

McConaughey replied: 'There are a lot of on that illiberal left that absolutely condescend, patronize, and are arrogant towards the other 50 percent'.

The actor then went on to criticize some of his Hollywood peers for refusing to accept the results of the 2016 election.

'I'm sure you saw it in our industry when Trump was voted in four years ago, they were in denial that was real. Some of them were in absolute denial,' McConaughey told Brand.

He then insinuated that it was therefore hypocritical of those same people to now be telling Republicans to passively accept the results of the 2020 election.

' it looks like Biden's our guy. Now you've got the right that's in denial, cause their side has fake news. And I understand, they've been fed fake news. No one knows what the hell to believe, right? So they're putting down their last bastion of defense,' he stated.

McConaughey - who describes himself as a liberal - was born and raised in conservative Texas, and told Brand that he believes in the power of meeting in the middle.

He claimed that both the left and the right have retreated too far into their own corners, saying: 'I almost feel like it's a move to say, "Let's get aggressively centric. I dare you"'.

It's not the first time McConaughey has spoken about politics.

Last month, the Interstellar star made headlines after saying he has 'not ruled out' a run for Texas Governor.

Speaking on the conservative Hugh Hewitt Show McConaughey said: 'I don't know. I mean, that wouldn't be up to me. It would be up to the people more than it would me.

'I would say this. Look, politics seems to be a broken business to me right now. And when politics redefines its purpose, I could be a hell of a lot more interested.'

McConaughey further stated that he believes American politics needs to 'stabilize' after the 2020 Presidential election before it can move forward.

'I want to get behind personal values to rebind our social contracts with each other as Americans, as people again,' he said.

'No matter what side of the aisle you're on, we have broken those social contracts.

'We don't trust each other, and that leads to us not trust in ourselves, which if that becomes, if that becomes epidemic, then we've got anarchy.'
